Odd issue we are facing at a single site would love some input

On 8th April 24 10 x T1600G-28TS switches went dark at one of our sites within a minute, that is they continued to carry traffic and trunk VLANs as normal, but ping, http and ssh requests all fail.

Interestingly all the 10 V1 and V2 T1600G-28TS switches at the site went dark, but the 3 x V3 T1600G-28TS switches are still contactable. We also have a dozen or so 8 port TP-link POE switches or various models which are still contactable.

The switches are connected to the primary Ubiquiti Edgerouter via a Ubiquiti Edgeswitch. Some switches are directly patched to the edgeswitch, others are daisy chained.

I imagine to fix this I need to go and reboot them, but before I do I'd like to diagnose as much as possible to avoid this in future. Has anyone come across anything like this? Anyone have any theories how they could all go dark at the same time?

Hi @Dsinc

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

Quite odd indeed. Sitting there, with no changes or anyone touched its config, it completely entered the situation where you cannot access them?

As you described, HTTP and SSH stopped working, have you checked if their ports are still open?

I would recommend you reboot one of them and check if it can recover. If it does not, you probably need to check if there is anything recently changed on your network environment. That might be a case where the access is blocked.

AFAIK, you can have tons of features to stop the access but still allow it to work.

You can have port security, ACL, and access control to stop the log-in. But it would presume it might be ACL you set on another switch in the network where your login PC is connected.

Hi @Clive_A

Thanks for your reply. As suspected a reboot of each switch was required to regain access. I have no idea what could have made them all go dark at the same time though - a malformed packet? Faulty hardware? Open to any theories.

Would NOT be possible AFAIK. It would be a software level thing. Not hardware I think.

If the packet is bad, it should be retransmit if you reconnect(or ping) to it. I think it might be a human error. It should not be failing in HTTP and ping at the same time unless it is rebooting.
