Model: ER605 (TL-R605)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.1

Trying to connect a tp-link TL-R605 router to a century link ActionTech C3000.

Followed Century Link suggestions: physical connection between WAN port on TL-R605 to

a non-wan port on the ActionTech. Set the ActionTech to Transparent Bridging with tagged-201 VLAN.

Set the tp-link to connect via PPPoE (as the ActionTech was configured) along with the

appropriate name and password. Also, set to use VLAN 201.

Connection fails. Log shows:

   PPPoE Discovery phase negotiation succeeded

   LCP sending CONFIG-REQUEST timeout

My incoming network is a bonded DSL pair which goes to the ActionTech DSL

phone input. As I understand it, the WAN ethernet port on this device is not used

unless one has gigabit CenturyLink.

@DQP

I'm a bit confused as to how you managed to set the DSL modem to bridge mode and also set the Vlan on it?

Actually you can try using the modem router as router mode to see if you can get an IP properly after you use the PPPOE.

@Virgo The actiontech C3000A has several WAN settings including this passthrough mode. There is also an additional tagged-201 option that was suggested by CenturyLink. When this modem is set to PPPoE, it connects properly. I don't have an option of connecting the TP-Link directly since I have incoming bonded pair phone lines and that only connects to the actiontech modem.

@DQP

You can also think differently, e.g. set up PPPoE + VLAN on the modem router to work normally as a router,

and select dynamic IP as the network connection type for the ER605.

You may have a try.

The TP-Link can use dynamic IP for its WAN connection, but it doesn't allow this to be the same network as the LAN. Doesn't it need both connections to operate properly?

Thinking about this some more ... perhaps I can set the WAN address to just a fixed one on the regular LAN and then create a new LAN on the other side of this device for VPN access....
