Hi everyone,

I’m currently using a TP-Link router (Archer series) at home for gaming, streaming, and remote work. Recently I configured a VPN directly on the router to secure all connected devices and access some region-restricted services.

Since enabling the VPN, I’ve noticed a noticeable drop in internet speed and higher latency, especially during online gaming and video calls. While I understand that encryption and routing can impact performance, I’m trying to find the best way to optimize this setup on TP-Link devices.

I also found this explanation helpful regarding VPN behavior and performance differences: VPNMAG — it provides a clear overview of how different VPN protocols can affect speed and stability.

So I’d like to ask the community:

What is the best way to configure VPN on TP-Link routers for minimal performance impact?
Are there specific models or firmware settings that handle VPN better (WireGuard, OpenVPN, etc.)?
Would it be better to run VPN on individual devices instead of the router itself?

Any advice or real-world experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
