Applying Omada 07: Deco Café

This article series simulates real-world examples of network configurations completed with Omada equipment for home lab and/or business environments. Any similarities to real persons or organizations are purely coincidental.

Challenge

Omar gets a call from a small business called Deco Café. The café is rapidly expanding and needs networks that all connect to each other to sync wait times between locations.

Each café has its own security system and the owner, Kenshi, wants to be able to view the cameras and the computer system on-site as soon as the network is set up.

Project Requirements

  • Each site needs to be able to talk to every other site to query for wait times.
  • The owner needs access to each site’s security system.
  • The setup for future cafes needs to be easy, so that he can potentially set up future locations by himself.

Planning

After researching, Omar decides to fit all future cafes with a Fusion Gateway due to the speed of configuration required. This would allow ease of setup and rapid connection via Lightlink VPN to each site.

The steps to connect a new café are as follows:

  1. Set up a Fusion with basic internet access.
  2. Connect the devices with Fusion’s full mesh SD-WAN.
  3. Use the Omada Cloud Portal to generate a LightLink VPN connection for each new café.
  4. Test and confirm Kenshi can access each site’s resources over LightLink VPN.

Omar starts with a quick network map of all the locations.

All locations will be connected by the Fusion Full-Mesh SD-WAN. To learn how to configure this for Fusion Gateways, check out our FAQ at the link below.

How to Configure SD-WAN on Fusion Gateway

Implementation

He starts by setting up the main Anaheim location’s gateway, showing Kenshi how to do so from his laptop. He configures the WAN connection of the device using the information provided by their ISP. Next, he sets up the relevant Wi-Fi networks, and finally the VLAN segmentation rules required to separate the customer Wi-Fi from the staff.

Next, Omar installs the Omada Navi App on Kenshi’s phone and laptop to quickly connect to each site individually.

Once that’s completed, Omar shows Kenshi how to set up a LightLink VPN, so that any future cafés can be set up with little fuss. After ensuring the Fusion Gateway has Cloud Access turned on, Omar has Kenshi log into the Omada App on his phone to get to the Anaheim Fusion Gateway’s console. He then shows Kenshi how to generate a VPN link, by going to Settings > VPN > LightLink VPN.

After enabling the toggle, Omar instructs Kenshi to tap on Generate New Link, and then tap the button to copy the invite link to his phone’s clipboard.

Finally, Omar has him reopen the Navi app, which asks for the link to be pasted from the clipboard. Success! The LightLink VPN is set up.

Verification

Kenshi connects his phone to the Anaheim Gateway using Lightlink, and checks the security cameras through his app.

He is successfully able to view the café from the camera app. Now all that’s left to do is set up the other cafes.

At the time of writing, the Fusion Gateways only support Full Mesh SD-WAN; you cannot mix an ER gateway and a Fusion Gateway, but you can still connect them together via Site-to-Site VPNs.
