My first post here, so hello to everybody, and TIA for any help!

I just bought a TP-link TL-SG105 switch

So, I plugged it to my Arris CM820 (I tried port 1, 4 and WAN)

Then I have connected my two macs to port (1,2,3,4 - I have tried all possible combinations)

One of the macs connects without problem. I see the IP of my provider, the Subnet Mask Address (255.255.240.0) and the router address (93.73.224.1)

But the other Mac does not, I get a message

“Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet.”

With an IP address (169.xxx.xxx.xxx) a Subnet Mask address (255.255.0.0) and no address for the router

So, what should I do to get the switch to switch my internet connection???
(I am completely ignorant of connectivity and network issues, so use simple and detailed language to answer me :) )

I guess your Arris CM820 is a modem, not a router. Switch has to connect to a router, not a modem. So you need to buy a router.

Hello Sommus, Thank you for your answer. Yes, it is right. Finally I gave back the switch and took a router. All works well now
