FTP Server timeout problem

Dear,
I'm having several timeout erros when listing directories on the FTP Server attached to a Samsung external 1Terabyte HD. This timeout also occurs when I try to access it as a folder through SMB on Windows as \\192.168.1.1.
Is there anything I can do to solve this?
