New WiFi Network Extenders AC1750 RE450 and AC1200 RE305 will not connect to 5GHz band

Model: RE305
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.8

I bought a new AC1750 RE450, which had no problems linking to the 2.4 GHz band on my ASUS dual band router.  I have an older AC1200 RE305 Ver1.0 which has no issues connecting both frequencies and a AC750 RE200 Ver3.8 which also will connect to both frequencies, but does not perform as well in it's location.  I bought (and returned) 2 AC1750 RE450 WiFi extenders because they would not connect to 5GHz band, even after following the instructions to take the router off of auto channel and explicitly link to channel 36, etc.  I replaced with an AC1200 RE305 (ver1.8).  It also will not link to the 5GHz band.  What's going on?

@SandeRF

Please ensure that the firmware of RE305 is up to date. Here is the download link of the firmware.

Then you can move the RE305 closer to the main router and adjust the wireless settings of the main router, like channel 40 or 44.

Meanwhile, can it detect the 5GHz network of main router? Or it is detected but unable  to connect to it?

What is the model number of the main router and who is your internet service provider?

I have confirmed that the extender has the latest firmware.  No difference if I change from AUTO to channel 40 or 44 on my router. (Same result with the RE450's.)  I have an ASUS RT-AC1200.

 I have also tried to connect from the Tether app with no luck.  I was able to briefly link the RE305 to my 5GHz network and got a message (in the settings page on my iPhone) that said "no internet connection," see below.  So it looks like it is detected, but unable to connect to it.

Do the RE305's and RE405's share a chipset for the 5GHz band?

I am aware of that.  It makes no difference if I watch from my router page - the tether app uses the iPhone to link the RE305 to the network so I was using that example.  The point is that the RE305 is not linking to the 5GHz band.  Do you want a screenshot from the router?  I don't want a lot of people to be able to see all my devices and IP addresses.

@SandeRF

To login to the extender via Tether app, we need connect cellphone to the extender's wifi first.

Meanwhile, if the extender still can detect the 5GHz but unable to connect to it, you can try to adjust the wireless settings, try to disable the wifi security to give it a go and test whether it works.

You can send me the screenshot of the router privately via message; And what is the model number of the main router?

Per the previous thread, the router model is ASUS RT-AC1200.  The RE305 won't connect to the 5GHz band using the WPS method either, only to the 2.4GHz band. This is the method I usually use.

I am not clear how to privately send a message - I see quick reply and reply when I open the posts.

@SandeRF

If you use the WPS button to configure the extender, you need repeat the procedures 2 times cause they are the dual band extenders.

Have you ever tried to login to the web UI of RE305 or RE450 to link to the 5GHz of the main router? Click here to get instruction.

What about the current hardware and firmware versions of the 2 extenders?

You can click the my nickname and then go to the homepage, you will see the message option.

The WPS method does work, but the the internet method did.  Thanks for all the detail and the links.  It took a couple of tries to log in, but it was very straightforward with your instructions (better than what comes with the extender).  I'm not sure why one extender links with WPS and the other won't.

I really appreciate all your help!

Correction, the WPS method didn't work. Who knows why.
