Model: HS100
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.5.4

Hello!

I purchased an HS100 smart plug on November 26, 2018 over Amazon. It worked well so far. Since about 1 week (10 Months in use) there is the following problem:

The socket does not switch off. If the socket is switched on and I press the button on the socket, the light goes out at the socket, and I also hear the relay click, but the socket continues to supply power. When I control the plug from the Google Home or Kasa App, the same thing happens. The LED in the socket goes off and you can hear the relay switching, but the socket doesn't turn off the power. I've reset the socket several times and set it up again, which didn't help.

I searched the forums and saw that this is a common problem.

@DarkTron

We will do some troubleshooting first and try to fix it.

May I know the model number of the appliance plugged into the HS100? What is the power consumption of it?

Have you ever tried to change another appliance to do a comparison analysis?

Besides, you can tell me the mac address of the plug and the TP-Link ID. To protect the security and privacy, you can tell me these information personally via the message.

Good day.

Thank you for your fast and kind reply.

The appliance plugged into the HS100 is:

600W Pc
  63W LG monitor
150W Benq monitor
  12W LED strip
  40W lamp
100W mic amp
-----------------------------
965W sum

Which is below the 3680W rated on the HS100. I tested pluging something else into the HS100. I also tried to change the socket. Both didn't help :(

I just checked the Kasa app and noticed sth. strange: The Kasa app tells me the HS100 is Hardware Version 2.0 while the plug has Hardware Version 3.0 printed on it.

Btw. Firmware Version is: 1.5.4

S/N: 2186024000983

I'll send you the MAC adress as pm.

Thanks for your reply.

While I got a little bit confused, you list some appliances plugged into the HS100.

May I know do you just list the devices used to plugged into the HS100 before, or you plug all of them into the HS100 via a power strip or so?

Meanwhile, for the hardware, V2 showing up on the kasa app shall prevail.

Good day.

If it clicks but the power doesn't shut off the relay contacts are sticking closed.  You might try tapping it to see if it'll start working but that's usually only short term and you'll probably need to replace it.  If it's out of warranty and you can solder you may be able to replace the relay.

Sorry, I thought you were asking for the devices plugged in.

Yes all the devices were pugged into the HS100 via a power strip.

@MikeP

I don't think the relay is stuck, because I can hear it click. If the relay clicks that means the contacs are switching. Despite this I tried tapping and shaking it, which didn't work.

The clicking you hear is the solenoid attached to the contacts engaging/releasing.  The contacts are spring loaded open, the solenoid pushes them closed.  If they don't open when the solenoid releases they're fused together.

@DarkTron

Hello, thanks for your reply.

From the current situation, it is suggested to contact the tech support with the serial number and proof of purchase to verify whether the replacement is qualified.

https://www.tp-link.com/support/contact-technical-support/#E-mail-Support

Meanwhile, except the watt, we need pay more attention on the current of the appliance, especially the instant current when you power them up, it may ruin the smart plug;

That is why we suggest you to plug the appliance to the smart plug directly without a power strip and other devices together.

Good day.

Hi everybody!

Thanks for all the help, the TP Community is very nice. Although I send the plug back to Amazon now and got a refund. I will now search for another smart plug as a replacement.

Bye!

Dark

Hi Dark, glad to hear that you got a refund from Amazon now, you can get a replacement to verify its performance then.

Have a good day.

@Kevin_Z  Dear support,

I also have this issue, I don't think I can get money back from Amazon since it is just over 2 years old. But my hs110 seems to be hanging, the switch indicates that it switched, the Kasa app reports it's off, Home Assistant reports that it is off and the button shows it's off. But the plug is not off, it continues to provide power to plugged in devices.
