 and here is how it looks when Re-connected (after reboot - switch off-on - or unplug)

Some update here.

Switched to 3G and connection lasted overnight without permanent interruption, so no need to manually reboot or restart the router as I have to do when on 4G. Also found that although signal strength on 3G varies from 100% to 0%! every 1-2 minutes or so, connection stays alive or auto re-connects in some way so does not drop completely like does when on 4G. I must add here that when on 4G, signal strength rarely varies from 50% to 100% although usually (90% of the time) shows 75% and 2 bars on the router's LED panel. (remaining 10% of the time is shared between 50% and 100% of 4G signal strength - 1 or 3 bars respectively)

24 hours in "3G only" with frequent interruptions but no disconnection at all !  That's great after all...

So (in my case) my guess is that "4G Preferred" selection does not work properly because it should interchange between 4G and 3G signal instead of total disconnection when 4G signal strength drops instantly for some reason. Hope that helps TP-Link techs to investigate in detail this situation.

I just have to check if "4G only" is more stable than "4G Preferred" ...who knows

edit: checked "4G only" no luck ...lasted 5 mins before total disconnect with 75% of 4G signal strength (if reception rating is accurate)

@Nickatsikas

3G is more stable than 4G, I think its because there is only one 3G band that the ISP is using so the router only locks to that single 3G band and so it doesn't have a speed or disconnection issue that frequently, as for the 4G network the ISP uses 2 to 3 LTE bands, the router keeps switching between those bands automatically every few minutes or a few hours if we are lucky and it creates some kind of problem I guess switching between different bands back and forth. The lack of band lock / band selection is also causing a lot of problems, one minute I'm getting good download speed 17 Mbps and 20 Mbps Upload and the next minute I'm getting 12 Mbps Download and 1 Mbps Upload and 5 Mbps download and 16 Mbps Upload, I noticed this while running speed test and the network bars were changing between 3 to 1 network bar. I get the best download and upload speed on 3 network bars, on 2 network bars I either get 12 Mbps Download and 1 Mbps Upload or 5 Mbps Download and 16 Mbps Upload but mostly 1 Mbps Upload speed.

I had been using 3G for 4 or 5 days now and as you have mentioned in your post, the signal strength drops to 0% from 100% sometimes. You'll also see a disconnection on 3G but not as frequent as on 4G mode. Here is the disconnection from my system log, I have marked in red color. See if you have the disconnection too in you system log.

@Creeper

Thanks Creeper for the explanation

No I don't see any "errors", I don't even see any "3G" although that's what I use from yesterday on.

I wonder why "4G Preferred" don't use 3G as "backup signal" (like on mobile phones) in order not to get totally disconnected every now and then...

Re:Archer MR400 disconnect from internet

@Nickatsikas

Try leaving the router on for more than 8 or 9+ hours or for the whole day if you can without restarting the router, the disconnection is not instant on 3G mode. I can see that you had only used the router for 3 hours when you posted the system log.

As you can see from my system log, the router disconnected after 8 hours of usage. The internet got connected at 9:54 A.M. and got disconnected at 17:54 A.M. I think the 3G disconnection has to do with my ISP, I remember having a disconnection after 8 hours of usage for 3G while I was using a Huawei 3G USB Modem a few years ago. So other than that I think 3G is very stable. I'll try restarting my router and do a new test and report back and see if I have a disconnection again after 8 hours of usage.

You cannot see 3G in your system logs because its a bug in the firmware. I get the opposite on my router, it says 3G even when I'm using 4G. My Archer MR400 HW Version is V1 btw.

UPDATE: The 3G connection got disconnected again after 8 hours. I restarted the router at 12:30 A.M. last night and it got disconnected in the morning at 8:30 A.M. so this my ISP problem but I didn't experience any internet slow down problem like on 4G mode after it reconnected, so 3G is very stable except the network bars dropping to 0% from 100% sometimes. I'll do one more test after this just to make sure.

@Creeper

Thank you again,

mine is dropping speed too low frequently on "3G only" mode, like every 2-3 minutes and lasts for 10-15 seconds. I believe it happens when reception drops from 100% to 0% - no bars - I can feel it during browsing the net, sometimes "no connection" message appears, but not at all permanent device disconnection that needs to be manually restarted/rebooted. Also not seen any "disconnection" record in the .log file- where I see some other logs that can't axplain, like "Server id not found" etc.

My main problem and question to TP-Link technicians is why router worked perfectly for 1+ month without even 1 disconnect on "4G Preferred" mode mounted in the exact same place, same SIM/ISP and position and suddenly does not work. 4G coverage/reception here is not excellent, but good/fair to all ISPs using mobile phones. Instead only works stable now on "3G only" mode, thus with much lower speeds, at about 30% compared to 4G

Is the device faulty? Became faulty for some reason? Should I issue a replacement to the dealer? it's only a 2,5 month device and I live 300kms away from the place of installation. What should I do to make it work as it should, like it worked for the 1st month when installed, with full 4G reception without inerruptions or any kind of problems at all.

and here is the log when on "4G Preferred" mode ...total disconnection within 5 mins! although not recorded in the log file. Signal stays at 75% after disconnection. Router message "Unknown failure reason. Please make sure your configuration is correct."  Manual reboot/restart is needed!

What I also did, tried with another SIM card of the same carrier (4G Preferred/3G Only modes) with the exact same results.

Re:Archer MR400 disconnect from internet

I've been reading your posts and thank you @Nickatsikas and @Creeper for the workaround of setting the connection to 3G. I have yet to try this with my router but have you guys done speed test with 4G vs 3G? How's the download and upload speeds looking like?

Cheers!

@Bonn

You are welcome :)

3G is very much slower than 4G for me, It depends on your ISP.

I get 7 or 8 Mbps Download and 1.2 Mbps Upload speed. I cannot use it to stream anything on 3G because the upload speed is too slow. On 4G I get 20 Mbps Download and 22 Mbps Upload speed, so that a huge difference.

4G has become unsuable for me, the band keep changing to a slow 4G bands with slow download and upload speed every few minute and sometimes it lasts for a few hours if I'm lucky. It doesn't want to stay locked on the 3 network bar 4G band that gives good download and upload speed for some reason, It always switches to 2 network bar or 1 network bar bands and when that happens the internet becomes very unstable on 4G and the speed starts to crawl till I can no longer open any pages but when I restart the router and it connects to the 2 or 1 network bar bands the internet works fine with slower download or upload speed so its not the ISP problem but the router's problem. So without the feature to lock on to the 4G bands we want this router is useless. And I don't think the band lock or band selection feature will be added soon enough. I'm already planning on getting the Huawei Router which has the feature but I'm on a Lockdown and Amazon won't ship items other than what is considered essential items. So I'm stuck with the router for now.

@Bonn

Hi and welcome,

4G download speed to me ...when 4G ability on router really works and shows 2 LED bars - 75% signal strength (via 5Ghz Wifi connection) using mobile phone reads 60+ Mbps download and 15+ Mbps upload but all of a sudden disconnects and manual restart/reboot is needed...  it is a pity!

3G reads like 10-12 max download and 4-5 max upload but download rate is not stable, it goes down to 1-2 and up again continuously, maybe depends on device, ISP network or traffic, not sure, but with MR400 physical connection to ISP on 3G is much more stable like Creeper explained.
