Hello,

I am looking to buy an Archer VR400 v3 for a specific use case.

 

I have a pfSense device acting as a router handling internal firewall/dns/dhcp etc.

 

My ISP provided device does not offer a modem only mode which causes some instability and I would like to replace with a device that can work in a modem only mode, on paper he Archer Vr400 v3 fits the bill.

 

Can I check that I can:
 

  1. Set up the device with he generic user name and password provided to my by my IPS (BT here in the UK)
  2. Set the Archer VR400 v3 to be modem only wih the instructions detailed here: https://www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/2728/
  3. Plug my WAN port of my pfSense device into the VR400 v3 and thats it?!

 

In my current setup I need to configure the pfSense device's WAN port to have an IP address in the same range as my ISP device (192.168.xxx.xxx) and my LAN port to use the internal address (172.16.xxx.xxx), in the new setup what IP address will the WAN port need, will it still use the 192.168.xxx.xxx range that is default on the Archer VR400 v3?

I can't quite get my head around how the IP address a device in modem only mode works, I assume it will have a public facing IP address from the ISP, but what would need to be configured between the modem and the pfSense router

I don't know about the pfSense in particular, but if the device in place of the pfSense was, for example, a generic Wi-Fi router or a Windows PC with Ethernet port, then you would setup the Internet connection on that Wi-Fi router or Windows PC by selecting "PPPoE" as connection type and enter the username and password from the ISP into the provided entry fields. Then save the connection and click "connect". That's normally all that is necessary to get online via a DSL modem.

 

There will usually be some advanced settings available in the configuration dialog, like adjustment of the "MTU Size", setting custom DNS' IP addresses, etc., but you can play with those later if you think you need to.

thanks, would the PPPoE user name and password not be set in the VR400 rather than anything connected to it?

If you switch the VR400 into Modem-Only mode by selecting Connection Type "Bridge", then the device that you connect to the LAN port of the VR400 needs to establish the Internet connection.

 

If you want the VR400 to establish the Internet connection, then you need to select Connection Type "PPPoE" on the VR400, but this means the VR400 will remain to be a Modem Router.

 

If you don't care about the Double-NAT issue, then either way should work for you.
