TL-MR6400 suddenly has no signal. Also cannot read SMS in sim card

Model: TL-MR6400
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version: ‪1.1.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 201113 Rel.63736n

Good day!

I have a TL-MR6400(EU) V5 with the following details:

Firmware Version:‪1.1.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 201113 Rel.63736n
Hardware Version:‪TL-MR6400 v5 00000001
IMEI:864072053707976

It was working fine for almost a year until only recently when it suddenly stopped receiving any signals and it also cannot read SMS from the attached sim card anymore. I have tested this same sim card on my phone and it worked just fine so the sim card is not the issue here. I also tried sim cards from different networks and they all did not work in the MR6400 but they all worked fine in my phone.

The sim card status is stuck in "Sim card prepared" but it cannot seem to connect to the network provider. I tried manually searching and setting up the connection profile to the one specified by the network provider but it did not work.

Also, I am getting this message in the logs:

ID Time Type Level Log Content
1 2018-10-01 08:03:47 4G Information ERROR: Get sim gid failed (0).
2 2018-10-01 08:03:47 4G Information ERROR: 0x00000010 QMI_ERR_NOT_PROVISIONED
3 2018-10-01 08:03:47 4G Information ERROR: Get sim card number failed (0).

5 2018-10-01 08:03:46 4G Information WARN: Sim card is inserted.

Please see screenshots below and the attached zip file for more details. It should contain more screenshots and the log file
Thanks

Update:

I changed the device's operation mode to wireless router and connected it to my other modem to gain access to the internet.

Through that, I was able to update the firmware to  ‪1.3.0 0.9.1 v0001.0 Build 201207 Rel.56223n

Unfortunately, this did not change anything as the same issue still persists. Still cannot connect to 3G/4G and cannot read SMS

Hi,

On the Advanced->Network->Internet page, please try to change Network Search from Auto to Manual, then check if your SIM card carrier is listed in the available network list, if so, select it manually to see if it solves the problem.

If the problem still exists, please insert the same SIM card into your phone again at same location, then check which 4G band your phone is using:

  @Sunshine thanks for the response.

I tried Advanced->Network->Internet page  and changing Network Search from Auto to Manual. It searched for around 30 seconds or so but I got this error message:

I also tried your other suggestion to insert the SIM into a phone and identify the 4G band using LTE discovery.

This is what I got.

  @neoson9999

Hi, is the internet working fine on the phone itself? and if you enable hotspot on the phone and connect another device to the phone hotspot, will internet also work?

Based on the screenshot of LTE discovery, it seems that it uses band 3 as primary band but the signal strength is almost 0 bar, and Under SIM 1(Ready), data network type shows HSUPA which is 3G, and Is data capable shows "false", which seems to be the phone is under 3G network only and no data services, so please help to confirm if the signal shows 3G or 4G on the top of your phone, and whether internet works fine.

  @Sunshine Hello. Sorry for the late reply, I got busy and was only able to look into this again today.

I am not entirely sure what happened but it started working again today! Using the same SIM (network #1 Smart) that I used last week, it connected to the internet automatically and speed is somewhat acceptable though connection is a bit spotty with disconnects here and there. I am writing this reply while connected to the same device.

As further test, I tried inserting a different sim of a different network (network #2 Dito). That network has better signal in my location but strangely, the device could not seem to connect to that one.

Here is a screenshot of LTE discovery on network #2:

At this point, I am glad that the device recognizes and can connect again to network #1 (Smart) but if you have any insights/suggestions on why the device cannot connect to network #2 (Dito), that would be very appreciated. I already tested network #2 on my phone and it has no issues, also tried hotspot and connecting my laptop, no issues. And also, I already got network #2 with this exact same SIM to work on this TPlink device a few months before.

Thanks!

  @neoson9999

Hi, thank you very much for the update, glad to hear that the network #1(Smart) has been working again now on MR6400.

For the network#2, your phone is using band 28 as primary band based on the screenshot, however, MR6400 EU version doesn't support band 28, that should be the reason why it doesn't work on MR6400. If the network#2 supports other bands in your area such as band 1, which is also supported by MR6400, it should be able to work on other bands, if no other available bands, MR6400 will show No Service on Advanced->Status page.
