Model: RE220
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

I have a BT Smart Hub 2 router.  Upstairs (where I work), I get about 120 mbps, according to https://www.speedtest.net/.  (The full speed of the line, which is fibre, is 450 mbps).

I have the RE220 plugged in as a range extender, with a different SSID to the router.  When i'm on the range extender network, i only get 6mbps according to speedtest.net:  about 5% of the main network speed.

Is this normal?  I am using a Macbook Air M1 with MacOS Big Sur in case that's relevant.

Thanks, Max

  @Toastkid

Hi, did you also get 6m/s on the 5ghz of RE220?

--If yes, please help me check the link speed on the client as well:https://www.tp-link.com/en/support/faq/2265/

And Is it possible to connect a laptop via Ethernet cable to RE220 to check its Ethernet speed as well?

Best regards.

@David-TP thanks - I am actually on the 5Ghz at the moment, i think the macbook chooses one of them automatically.

In wireless diagnostics I can see the 2.4ghz network is there, but I can't work out how to connect to it instead of the 5ghz one.  I was following instructions online (this site won't let me include the link but the article is called 'macOS: How to Force Connect to 5GHz or 2.4GHz WIFI Band (Same SSID)' so you can find it easily)
but it didn't work: i'm still on the 5ghz.

My macbook doesn't have an ethernet port so I did some experiments with my windows laptop, which does.

So, with the windows laptop:
5ghz wifi, sitting next to the macbook: 90 mbps
5ghz wifi, sitting next to the range extender: 140 mbps
Ethernet to range extender: 90mbs (slower than wifi! wasn't expecting that).

Based on the windows experiments, it seems like the range extender is working - so maybe the problem is in the mac hardware or macos?  I'd like to try the 2.4 option on the macbook, if i can work out how to connect to it, any ideas?  thanks
