Model: Archer VR400
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.5.0 0.9.1

Hi everyone,

I have a question I'm hoping to get some help with. I have just purchased a TP-Link AX12 to replace my Archer VR400 (v3), waiting on delivery.

I have a 3 bedroom house (200m2 or 2,000ft2) with a 75/20 fibre to the premises connection.

I'm hoping to set up the AX12 as the main router, and then the VR400 in bridge mode in another room connected directly to the AX12 using CAT6. I'd like to set up the VR400 using OneMesh to increase WiFi coverage in my house. Firstly, that should be relatively straight forward right?

Secondly, when using bridge mode and OneMesh, will it be possible to use the free LAN ports on the VR400 as an unmanaged network switch? My PC and PS5 are currently connected to a TPLink switch but if possible I'd like to reduce the amount of devices I have to power in my office (so basically replacing the switch with the VR400 if possible). Will that be possible?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Will

What's your ISP service type (using VR400 leads me to believe it's a DSL service - is that correct ?).

There's a better approach - continue to use VR400 as you main router and set AX12 is AP mode to expand your wireless coverage.

Here's how to configure AX12 in AP mode. After configuring the AX12 in AP mode upload the beta FW release from this thread.

When one of these routers is in AP mode, they can't build a mesh network but they'll give you the best network throughput and connection stability instead.

Finally, you would be able to use AX12 LAN ports as an ethernet switch for sure.

@terziyski Hey, thanks for getting back to me!

I'm based in Australia where it's called Fibre to the premises (FTTP) - can't include link here but it's an easy google "What is Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) broadband?"

Basically I've got fibre optic coming into my garage and terminating into an Network Termination Device (NTD) which does the modulation, then CAT6 running from NTD to VR400 in kitchen. The VR400 is currently running in Wireless Router Mode.

Thanks for your tips, I'll give it a try when I receive the device.

Got it. My suggestion still stands - it would be much easier to configure AX12 in AP mode than the VR400 - you got nothing to loose in this scenario - both devices are gigabit routers.
