Model: Deco X80-5G
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 2.1.1 Build 20230410 Rel. 78273

Hi All!

I have have the following setup:

Deco X80-5G (Main) connected to 1Gbps fiber box via WAN Port 2 (the 1Gbps port)

Three satellite Deco X60 (S1, S2, S3) all connected to a 1 Gbps switch which is connected to the main deco's 2 Gbps port.

The X80-5G is configured to use fiber for internet and have 4G/5G as backup with WAN port Port 2.

This is expected: When the X80-5G is connected to 4G/5G for internet, the three X60 satellitedecos connect to the main using ethernet backhaul (as expected).

This is not expected: When the X80-5G is connected to the fiber for internet, satellite decos S1 and S2 establish an ethernet backhaul with S3 and S3 then connects to the X80-5G wirelessly.

Any ideas?

It appears when your Main Deco connected to the fiber, gigabit networking switch loses its Ethernet link to Main Deco. I can't explain why it is happening, but symptoms match.

See this for more detailed explanation of what happens when Ethernet connection between switch and Main Deco is down: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/655034?replyId=1319560

  @Alexandre.

Thanks for the reply!

I'll try changing the cable, but what I find strange is that with the same cable backhaul is working when the x80-5g switches to 4G/5G. I seems more like a software/ routing problem.

I'll try a different cable and get back.

I swapped the cable with no change, as soon as the x80-5g switch back to the fiber internet connection the backhaul stops working as I expect it would.

What if you swap connections on Main Deco:

Fiber - to 2.5Gbps Main Deco port

Switch - to gigabit Main Deco port

  @Alexandre.

For some reason the x80-5g is not able to establish internet connectivity to the fiber via the 2.5 Gbps port. Not sure what the issue with that could be (I did try with different cables as well as connecting via another switch).

I've noticed that the latest version of the x80-5g firmware had some "optimizations" made to lan/wan ports, I'm going to downgrade to the previous version and see what happens.

Downgraded to V1_2.1.0 Build 20230224 and still no joy.

Can't help you much with this, but at least problem description is much simpler now: "Main Deco 2.5Gbps WAN port can't negotiate gigabit speed with gigabit port of fiber modem."

Hi, have you tried to swap the location of the satellite Deco X60 units to see whether it is a random Deco X60 that loses the Ethernet Backhaul, or a specific unit?

By the way, May I know the model numbers of the network switch as well as the gigabit fiber model here?

Wait for your reply and Thank you very much.

  @David-TP

Hi David!

Regarding which X60 loses the ethernet backhaul - it seems to be dependent on startup order after a reboot. I have swapped the units around and that did not make any difference.

The switch that I'm using for connecting the X60 units to the X80-5G is a tplink TL-SG108 (I have tried another 5-port tplink switch, but it did not make a difference).

For the fiber router - I've created a ticket with my fiber provider to get that information (it is a sealed box & I cannot see any barcode / model number on the outside) and will forward it to you asap.

Question - does both ethernet ports on the x80-5g share the same mac? If the 2.5 Gbps port has a different mac, how do I get it? My ISP needs this since I'm using a static IP address.

  @vetgat

Hi, Thank you very much for the update.

Sorry that I missed your reply.

I don't think there is an individual MAC address for the 2.5GHz port.

We can leave the model number of the ISP model behind for now and I'd like to forward your case to the senior engineer directly to see whether they had any other advice.

Please check the email later for more suggestions.

Thanks again and best regards.
