Deco Internet Backup Feature Guide

Internet Backup keeps the Deco Mesh system always online by switching to a backup network when the original ISP network is disconnected to ensure constant internet access. There are 3 backup modes available and only one mode can be enabled at a time.

How to enable Internet Backup

  • Open your Deco app, and go to More > Advanced >Internet Backup.
  • or Go to More > Internet Connection > Internet Backup.

Hotspot Backup Mode

Allow Deco to connect to a hotspot backup network wirelessly, like your mobile hotspot, or other secured wireless networks nearby.

How to enable Hotspot Backup Mode

1. Set a fixed WAN port

2. Select a nearby hotspot for network backup.

3. (Optional) Edit the Advanced Hotspot Backup settings

  • Add multiple wireless networks to the Hotspot List.

  • Set Speed Limit and Access Permission.

Both 4G/5G Backup and Hybrid Mesh Backup Modes require having an extra Deco 4G/5G model in the Mesh system, such as Deco X50-5G.

4G/5G Backup Mode

The Deco 4G/5G model is set as the main Deco and works in wireless router mode. Actually, this Internet Backup method is not dedicated to the Deco X50/X55_1.6.0 firmware and many Deco 4G/5G routers already support this feature.
For more details, please refer to How to set up 3G/4G or 4G/5G Backup on Deco router.

Hybrid Mesh Backup Mode

The Deco 4G/5G model is set as the satellite Deco and works in wireless router mode. It is very useful when Deco X50 is the main Deco and Deco X50-5G is added as the satellite unit. After the primary network is restored, Deco will automatically switch back to the ISP cable service.

How to enable Hybrid Mesh Backup Mode

1. Set a fixed WAN port under More > Advanced > WAN Port.
2. Configure 4G/5G Backup settings

  @David-TP

Can you tell me, about the Hybrid Mesh backup Mode, does the X50-5G must be linked only to the main Deco or it can be placed anywhere, even far away from the main unit ?

Example : main Deco is on basement, X50-5G is placed on top floor (to get better connection), other satellites in the middle distance between the X50-5G and the main Deco.

Thanks in advance !

Hi, Yes, the Hybrid Mesh works no matter whether the Deco X50-5G is connected to the main Deco X50_1.6.1 or one of the satellite Deco X50_1.6.1.

However, please make sure the Deco X50-5G_V1 has been updated to 1.2.0 firmware here:

Deco X50-5G-V1-1.2.0 Supports WireGuard VPN, Hybrid Mesh and More

Best regards.

  @David-TP Thanks for the answer.

I updated my X50-5G, I now see the option for Hybrid Mesh backup.

After configuring the option and simulate internet disconnection, the feature is not working at all.

I even waiting for several minutes but still nothing, no internet connection from 5G unit.

On app the Hybird Mesh backup option dissapeared completely... and went back again after reconnecting internet.

I will report it to Fredo with screenshots.

------

About Hotspot Backup Mode, is it the main Deco that must be connected to the backup network ? Or all satellites are able to connect to the backup network ?

Thanks in advance.

  @David-TP  which Deco models support the Mobile Hotspot Mode? I have purchased a 55X and a 55X Pro and now a 75XE Pro and none of them offer this option. Talked to chat for a while about the 55X and was told it was a specific Hardware version but they couldn't tell me where I could get that particular hardware version from. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

  @DadSolo

Hi, Deco X50_V1 and Deco X55_V1 are the only models that have added this feature for now.

Many online retailers don't mark the hardware version. If you check from the local store, the hardware version could be found on the product label of the package box, such as:

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Hi - a few questions on how to enable this.  I've got 3 xe75's and an x50 outdoor.  I have two ISP's one is redundant at the moment but want to make this the backup hotspot.

my questions are:

1) if I purchase the correct x50 version then I'm assuming this will support the internet backup option and I can use the additional isp as the backup hotspot?

2) how would I enable the feature in the app?  Is it product aware so will make the feature available if a supported device is in the mesh?

thanks in advance

Nick

  @David-TP

Hello,

I have issues setting up Internet backup on my X55, Firmware 1.6.1

I have mobile hotspot via 4G modem/ unlocked/, provided by local mobile operator.

I followed the official TP Link guidelines, how to set up Hotspot Backup Mode:

1. Open Deco app.

2. Navigate to menu: More-Advanced- Internet backup. Select Enable.

3. Deco app is searching for mobile hotspot /wireless/. Select preferable hotspot. Enter password.

4. Selected hotspot is determined as Internet backup /Hotspot added is confirmed/.

5. Test Hotspot connection- failed. Deco app is requiring me to connect to my existing wifi network. Error message is raised saying hotspot backup cannot be established.Existing wifi network drops down, as well as ethernet connections. Still able to access decos, from Deco app. Green light at main deco can be observed.

6. Change WAN port feature to "Fixed".

7. Select e.g. WAN port 2 as port, where I plug in lan cable from main Internet provider.

8. In order to restore existing wifi network, need to remove internet backup.

Online support cannot give solution, only to connect 4G router wired to main Deco /plugged in LAN port, WAN port- auto determined/

What I am missing?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.
