Model: Deco E4
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version:

The incoming Fibre speed is 300mbps (and is fibre to property) into British Telecom Hub 3 (which is new), I have set up 1 x Deco E4 AC1200 with an ethernet cable (to create a TP Modem) connected to BT Hub 3.

This creates 2 networks where the BT operates at approx 290mbps wireless in the surrounding area, HOWEVER the issue I have is Deco 4 (as a TP Modem) operates at approx 80mbps and then reduces drastically through the others.

Previously I have used BT discs which despite dropping out occasionally (known issue) and now having upgraded to BT Hub 3 the discs are not compatible and the replacement Bt discs are rent per calendar month only.

The Tp Link box refers to a dual speed of 1200mbps

To summarise it appears the first Tp Link Deco E4 AC1200 instantly slows the speed and then each other Deco E4 runs slower than the previous one, the end results is the whole network is not what I expected, SO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE (otherwise I will have no option other than return the Deco E4's)

To answer your questions as best I can:

1. Yes.

2. The only difference is size of the units as far as I can see, perhaps someone else can enlighten us here. M4 and S4 both have Ethernet ports capable on 1gbps.

3. There are a myriad of other devices for a MESH system, TP-Link is just one manufacturer. Have a search for Best MESH wifi 2025. It is a bit of a minefield though - JUST MAKE SURE YOU GET ONE WITH AT LEAST 1GBPS ETHERNET PORT. The Wifi TX (transmission) rate (which on the E4 is AC1200) is the minimum you should look for.

@Vanellus Thank you for this information and confirming the E4 speed is capped at 100mbps.

1. You have suggested the S4, will this run up to 300mbps?

2. What is the difference between the S4 and M4 please.

3. Is there any other device you would recommend as a Home Mesh system?

is this a result of the E4 only having 100mbps Ethernet? Your 300mbps BT line is thus dramatically reduced immediately and the vagaries of Wi-Fi take care of the rest...

I'd return the E4 and look for Decos with 1gb Ethernet

@Roche1800 This is from Google search for a Deco E4:

Deco E4 provides fast and stable connections with speeds of up to 1167 Mbps and works with the major internet service provider (ISP) and modem. Deco can handle traffic from even the busiest of networks, providing lag-free connections for up to 100 devices.

Whats the problem for me?

Yes. According to the specifications for the E4 the Ethernet ports are only 10/100 mbps ports. If you plug an Ethernet cable between your BT hub and the E4 you are reducing the speed of the ‘internet’ to 100mbps AT THE MOST. Ignore the 1200mbps speed displayed as that refers to the maximum Wi-Fi connection rate between your devices and the E4. The limiting factor is the Ethernet port speed. You have no choice but to swap the E4 to something else which has faster ports (like my S4) .
