Hello TP-Link Community,

I wanted to share some general best practices I’ve been using while setting up and troubleshooting TP-Link routers and mesh systems (Archer routers, Deco mesh, and WiFi extenders) in home networks.

These are not model-specific but tend to solve many common issues.

Initial Router Setup Tips:
- Always update the firmware right after first login
- Complete basic setup using the TP-Link Tether app, then verify advanced settings via web interface
- Change the LAN IP address if the modem uses the same subnet
- Manually configure WiFi security (WPA2/WPA3) instead of leaving it on auto

Improving WiFi Stability & Speed:
- Avoid auto channel selection in crowded environments
- Place Deco units or extenders where signal strength is still above 50%
- Disable Smart Connect temporarily when troubleshooting
- Use Ethernet backhaul for Deco mesh systems if possible

Common Issues & Fixes:
- Internet drops but WiFi stays connected → Check DNS and firmware
- Slow speeds on 2.4GHz → Channel congestion or interference
- Unable to access router login page → Clear browser cache or confirm gateway IP
- Extender keeps disconnecting → Unit placed too far from main router

I keep documenting these steps so I don’t repeat the same mistakes across different TP-Link installations.

For anyone who prefers step-by-step walkthroughs, I’ve organized my notes here:
Network Config

It mainly covers router setup, WiFi extender configuration, mesh placement, and general network troubleshooting.

Hope this helps others here. I’m open to suggestions or corrections from more experienced users.

Thanks!
