An "Incorrect Password" error in the TP-Link Tether app usually happens when you mix up your router's local device password with your TP-Link ID account password, or when router firmware bugs, app glitches, or incorrect Wi-Fi/guest network connections block authentication.
Common Causes & Fixes
  • Password Mix-up:
    • Older or local-only router setups require the local device management password (often custom-made during first setup).
    • Cloud-managed setups require your TP-Link ID email and password. Try logging out of the app entirely and signing in using your TP-Link ID instead of local login.
  • Network Connection Issues:
    • Ensure your phone is actively connected to your TP-Link device's primary Wi-Fi network.
    • Turn off cellular data on your phone.
    • Disconnect from any Guest Network, as guest isolation blocks app management.
  • App and Hardware Glitches:
    • Force close the Tether app, clear its cache, or reinstall it entirely to clear corrupt login tokens.
    • Reboot your TP-Link router or range extender by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
  • Factory Reset:
    • If nothing works and you are permanently locked out, press and hold the physical Reset button on your router/extender for about 5–10 seconds until the LEDs flash. Then set up the device fresh via the Tether app.
