Hi all,

So I just purchased two CPE510's to bring service to an outbuilding and I'm wondering if I need to purchase an access point for the outbuilding.

Does the client CPE also function as a radio, or will I need a separate AP?

Long story short:

Building A: Modem > Router > CPE510 (AP) ))))))))))))))wireless((((((((((((((( CPE510 (Client) at Building B > AP > Wireless Devices

or

Building A: Modem > Router > CPE510 (AP) ))))))))))))))wireless((((((((((((((( CPE510 (Client) at Building B > Wireless Devices

Thanks for any info!

An additional AP is recommended since CPE510 has a directional antennas, but for typical distribution of a WiFi signal you would want to use omnidirectional antennas (and probably 2.4 GHz or a dual band AP). On the other hand, if you can mount the second CPE on building B far enough behind the building, so that the building is covered by the 45° antenna beam of the CPE510, you could also use its built-in AP in addition to the Client mode.

Good explanation, I agree with this.

I doubt this is a good idea since Client mode doesn't have wireless radio enabled to broadcast a wireless signal to the end devices. This is no such option under Client mode. See this picture.

Oh, indeed it has. It's then becoming either "Repeater" or "Bridge" mode, both are technically client mode with an AP enabled (WiFi adapter in STA and managed mode simultaneously).

But you're right, it's not called "client mode" even if it uses this mode as for example reflected in "AP client router" mode, which is also a combined AP and client mode, together with a router mode.
