Model: Adapter
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version: 4.0.2 Build 20180308 Rel.37064

The new 4.0.3 Firmware for the TL-WPA4220 KIT V4 breaks password access via the tpPLC app. Even when you change the password via the web portal, access to the device via the tpPLC app fails. It works and is recognied via the web portal.

The only way I could restore access was to have the original unit swapped out by the retailer. I have not tried to update the Firmware on the new device. And yes, acces is fine on the 4.0.2 Firmware both via tpPLC and the web portal.

@RandomGeeza

Hello, the TL-WPA4220KIT does not support tpPLC app, do you mean tpPLC utility?

After you changed the login password of the TL-WPA4220 via the web portal, is there any error message when you try to access the web UI with the new password via the "tpPLC app”?

Could you please shot a short video of the current issue as well?

Thanks for your support in advance, and have a nice day.

Yes I meant the utility.

The only message that popped up was "Failed".

Because I have swapped the unit out with the retailer I am unable to demonstrate it. However, I am very hesitant to update the replacement unit for fears that the same situation will occur.

@RandomGeeza

Try to reset the TL-WPA4220kit by holding the reset button/hole for 10s with it powered on.

Then try to relogin to the web UI via the tpPLC utility and change the login password. Click save.

After that, try to re-access the web interface with the tpPLC utility and new login password.

Still the same, please show us a picture of the error message.

May it work.

Hi again,

I am not comfortable trying this on my replacment unit. The retailer will not swap it out again if the same sitaution occurs.

May I suggest you guys test it out on your own gear... All I did was update the firmware from 4.0.2 to 4.0.3. There were no other variables. I then logged in on the webGUI to check it had taken and all set login credentials worked without issue.

I then went into the tpPLC Utility and checked again and it was here that the issue occured. The same credentials failed with the message "Failed". I went back to the webGUI and changed the password to something simple. And on the tpPLC Utility the same issue occured. I also reset the unit and it still threw the "Failed" error. That is when I decided to return the unit to the retailer. The new unit is currently on 4.0.2 and I will not be updating it to 4.0.3. Everything works as intended on 4.0.2.

I hope that helps.

@RandomGeeza

We did a test at our lab, after we upgraded to the 4.0.3 and change the login password via the web portal, we can relogin with the new password through tpPLC APP.

We tried a lot of times, all work well;

So if you do not mind, you can hard reset the TL-WPA4220kit and start from the scratch to give it a go.

Still the same, you can shot a short video to us.

Besides, please be assured that the hard reset won't damage the powerline adapters.

Good day.

@Kevin_Z

Really old thread but i had the exact same thing happen to me, so there is an edge case where your firmware loses the correct password and not even the default password works!

In fact i found the problem for you tplink!

If your password before the firmware update was over 15 characters just dont type anything after the 15th character and it then allow you to log in. I would suggest to anyone updating, reduce your password to 15 or less. Please Tplink fix this

@Spamtomas

Hi, thank you very much for your feedback.

Just to confirm, before the firmware upgrade, if the login password is over 15 characters, after the firmware update, you could not use the same password, or the default admin log into the web interface via IP address/domain name, or the global icon of the utility?

---after firmware update, if you reset the adapter, are you able to log into via admin?

If It is less than 15, everything works as it was before?

Thanks a lot and wait for your reply.

This is the correct answer, no reset required.

Hi both, I gave up with all TP Link products... these devices and the range extenders. They are boxed and stored in my Garage. I doubt I will use them again.

I went with a Mesh system from a competitor and haven't looked back, best purchase ever.

I appreciate all the responses and the fix/workaround. Hopefully, others will benefit from all your efforts.
