Chromecast won't connect to YouTube etc. when I enter Primary/Secondary DNS in DHCP page

Region : UnitedKingdom

Hardware Version : V9
Firmware Version : 3.16.9 Build 150104
ISP : Virgin Media
My Chromecast works perfectly (including YouTube, iPlayer etc.) when I leave the Primary/Secondary DNS in the DHCP page empty. But when I specify the DNS of my Smart DNS provider in the DHCP page, the Chromecast is no longer able to connect to YouTube, iPlayer, etc. I can still cast the screen of my Nexus 7, and the Chromecast still seem to be able to pick up pictures from my online Google+ account to use as background images.
To be clear, I am NOT blocking the Google DNS in Advanced Routing > Static Routing List.
Any idea what is going on? As far as I understand the Chromecast should simply disregard the Primary/Secondary DNS I set in the DHCP page and keep using the Google DNS. I assume it is an issue with the router because there are plenty of success stories of Chromecast+router set up this way... thanks.

How annoying. Thanks for that. I might try with an old router myself. I initially considered another cheap new wireless router but at first sight they mostly seem to be TP-Link and problems with Chromecast seem to be common (e.g. with the TL-WR940N).

I'm returning the C7. A daily deal site here in the US is selling a Netgear N900 (WNDR4500) for $30 today. Doesn't have AC capability but I think I will forego that until I can get a decent AC router for less than $100. I'm confident the Netgear will work fine with Unlocator/Chromecast. It better!
