I've seen several other threads around here with what sounds like similar issues, so I have decided to make my own post and hopefully get some new insight into what on earth the problem I am having is, and why suddenly my Tapo devices just seem to hate my new modem so much :(

Background

Used a Tapo C100 for years with little to no issues. Camera set up was a breeze, everything worked as intended. Recomended Tapo to everyone I knew who was looking for a simple home security and monitoring device that worked well and was cost effective.

About a month ago, I got a new modem. I decided to upgrade simply because the modem I had was getting older.

Recieved a new Hitron CODA 458 modem, a common name in modem/router combinations and a pretty commonly issued device by ISPs in Canada.

Initially, I was able to connect my C100 with no problems. However, it only remained connected for a day or so, and then decided it no longer wanted to be on my Wifi Network.

All the troubleshooting tips I read were suggesting I should reset the device using the pinhole button and set it up again. I did that. Except this time, the camera did not want to pair.

I thought perhaps the camera had stopped working correctly, as at this point it was also a few years old. Since I liked Tapo, I decided to upgrade to a C200. Ordered it, opened it when it arrived, plugged everything in carefully and went to set it up following in instructions. Lo and behold, it also failed to pair right out of the box.

After following all of the troubleshooting tips on my end that I could, I contacted Tapo Support through webchat. With the help of an agent, I was able to get the camera to connect. The fix was a little odd - during the pairing failed screen he suggested I close the app and open it again, which I did. That seemed to correct something and my C200 was working great!

Fast forward a week later. My internet went out, so I did a reset of my modem (soft reboot, as is sometimes needed), and my C200 decided it no longer liked my Wifi and refused to connect. Once again, I reset it using the reset button and started through the setup process. Much like when I first tried to connect it, it refused to pair. Closing the app and re-opening it during the failed pairing also no longer seems to work. Sometimes it flat out refuses to connect to my Wifi Network, but when it does, it will never get past the pairing step. I

Troubleshooting

I have been through the troubleshooting steps so many times, to avoid having someone come back to me and suggest 'have you tried restarting your modem?' I am going to list all of the steps I have taken here:

1. Disabled my modem's Firewall, as well as any VPN passthrough and other such security options.

2. Disabled Band Steering.

3. Made sure that the Tapo C200 was connecting to the 2.4 band network, and not the 5G, I even completely disabled 5G, just to be safe.

4. Made sure that my phone, and the modem were all in close proximity.

5. Completely reset my modem, phone, and logged out of the Tapo app and logged back in.

I'm going to have another chat with a Tapo WebAgent later today and see if we can get the camera working again. I just don't understand how something can work so well with my Wifi network, then decide suddenly it doesn't want to anymore and refuse to connect or pair despite having changed nothing. I use my C200 for my home security, and part of what is important when it comes to security is consistancy. I am very close to giving up on Tapo and looking for another brand that won't make my life hell every time it needs to be reconnected.

Hi,
Thank you for your detailed case report.

Based on the troubleshooting you have done, you can try some other tips like:
1. Ensure your Tapo app is the latest one.
2. Try to set up the Tapo Cam with a different phone.
3. Make sure your modem's Wi-Fi name and password do not have special characters.
4. Connect the Tapo C200 to your phone's hotspot Wi-Fi for a comparison.

Usually, once you have configured your modem to work again after it has no internet access, if you set the same Wi-Fi name, password, and security type as before, the Tapo cam will reconnect to the Wi-Fi automatically after reboot, and you don't need to reset and reconfigure it.

If you have contacted our chat agent and the problem is solved, any experience/solution sharing is highly appreciated.

Best Regards

Yes, you are correct - the camera should recognize the network and continue connecting after a simple modem reset, but for some reason it wasn't.

I did finally get it working again! I don't honestly know why the device is so finicky when it comes to pairing, but to anyone having the same struggles here is a list of what I did to get it to work and are some alternative suggestions to try if you're experiencing the same problem rather than the ususal "did you restart your modem?" advice.

1) Reset the Tapo C200 using the on-board reset button. Once the camera has reset, do not attempt to pair it. Unplug it from the wall.

2) Sign out of the Tapo App on your smartphone, then delete the app.

3) Go to your phone's Wifi Networks screen. I use an iPhone with the latest iOS, so I am not sure if these options are different than on Android. Make sure you are connected to the Wifi Network you're trying to get the C200 to run on, and then click the small letter "i" in the blue circle next to the Wifi network name to go to the settings for that Wifi Network.

4) Once on the Wifi Network Setting Screen, make sure the following are disabled: Low Data Mode/Private Wifi Address/Limit IP Address Tracking. You can turn these features back on without issue once the camera is paired again. I'm not sure if this helped but you may also want to try configering the DNS to be 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 on the Wifi Network as well.

5) Power off your phone completely. Do not just close the screen, be sure to do a full shut-down and wait a couple of minutes.

6) Power off your modem completely. Best course of action is to unplug it from the wall to make sure it fully power cycles. Give it about five minutes or so.

7) Power on your modem and let it finish booting up. Plug the camera back in. While the camera is booting back up, redownload the Tapo App and then sign back into your account.

8) Run the usual set up process again. The Tapo device should find your Wifi Network and connect to it.

9) The pairing failed screen will come up like usual. Instead of re-attepmting or going back a step, quit out of the app. Don't just leave it running the background, make sure you fully close the app.

10) When you re-open it, you will see your Tapo camera synced and ready to be edited. You can change the names, settings etc and should now be paired.

This is kind of a silly process, I really hope Tapo can down the road improve the quality of their device pairing. They make solid products that are affordable, I like them a lot. This setup is just needlessly confusing.

I did notice an interesting point you made about the Wifi Network name or password having symbols in it. My network name has spaces between the words, and my password does include a specific symbol somewhere in the mix. Do you think this may be causing the issue??

  @DailyNightly

Hi,
Thank you very much for the case sharing. Usually, the special characters in the Wi-Fi name and password may cause the device to fail to connect to the Wi-Fi network, and if your camera can connect to the Wi-Fi, then the Wi-Fi settings may not be the reason for the issue.
From the setup process, it may be your phone is not connected to a Wi-Fi network, or connected to other Wi-Fi networks that are different from the camera, or there is a lot of interference in the Wi-Fi network so the setup process is stuck on the pairing step.

Best Regards
