  @Wayne-TP Hi! I am trying to follow the instructions to generate a Matter code as instructed. However, the article in the app makes mention of different instructions. I am using the RV20 Max, up to date to its newest firmware, and I cannot get to generate a Matter code at all - there's no option to do so in the app. Can you help me out? The app recommended me to respond to this article, thank you!

Hi  @Wayne-TP,

I'm looking to put all my smart devices into a single service, moving away from having to maintain multiple apps and lingering accounts. I have been buying a number of Matter over WiFi, Matter over Thread devices from various brands past few month. None of them required companion app to set them up. It worked directly with my smart home platform by scanning the code, even after factory reset, without prior set up done.

Only Tapo is forcing the app usage/cloud registration to make it work. The device is on the latest firmware with Matter support, but it cannot be discovered by Matter hub after factory reset, until going through Tapo app network setup.

Experimented a number of ways to use it with my platform only For example, 1. obtaining Matter code, 2. unlinking from account while the device is offline, 3. then setting it up with my smart home platform using the Matter QR code. It worked as I expected until the reboot, which tells it is definitely capable just like other brands.

It loses WiFi on reboot where it looks like it does some check with cloud to block local use of the device out side of app by setting some flags to disable WiFi connection. Only WiFi gets blocked, and other settings like language is retained, which seems intentional.

Why isn't there an option to use without Tapo app/cloud registration? I think it invalidates the whole point of Matter standardization. Shouldn't have been advertised as Mattter support product if it was going to force Tapo app. Please fix this as soon as possible.

  @RV30user

Normally removing a Matter device from one Matter platform should not affect its connection on other Matter platforms.

Which Tapo robot vacuum do you have? What's the hardware and firmware version? And which Matter platform is it associated with?

  @Wayne-TP  I have Tapo RV30 Max (hardware version 1.0) with the latest firmware 1.2.3 Build 250411 Rel.094615 installed. I obtained Matter code after the initial set up with Tapo app and then performed factory reset.

I followed a guide "(2) TP-Link Matter-enabled devices can also be set up with third-party Matter-enabled Apps" from https://www.tp-link.com/nordic/support/faq/3520/ to set up with third-party app, but Both HomeKit or SmartThings hub cannot discover the vacuum to connect. I then used the numeric code instead in Apple Home and ST, and they both show "Unable connect to the device" after a while. It connects with the 3P apps only after device is registered and used with Tapo app. I don't see the same issue with other Matter supported products (they connect directly without their companion apps). It's very frustrating to see the device advertised as Matter-supported, yet it doesn't allow use with third-party apps alone.

  @RV30user

It seems like the robot vacuum gets reset before linking to the Matter platforms, you only did the Tapo configuration to get the Matter code, is it correct?

What if you try to add the device to the Matter platforms first? Once the setup is done, then delete the device in the Tapo app.

  @Wayne-TP I also tried that - initial setup with Tapo app, setting up for SmartThings with Matter, unlinking from Tapo account, and then removing Tapo app. The robot gets reset automatically at unlinking step, erasing WiFi and all Matter setup together.

  @Wayne-TP I

unlinked it from Tapo app, selecting robot and removing the  robot from account in the settings. Expected it to still work with SmartThings over Matter, but it just does factory reset - making it goes offline. It cannot connect to WiFi without Tapo app/registration despite being Matter compatible.

Cannot find a way to connect this only with SmartThings while all other Matter products like Aqara, Govee, Eve, etc work as expected without their companion apps. Could you please fix?

  @RV30user

Just checked with the tech team, the Matter capability on the robot vacuum is achieved by the TP-Link cloud. Device should stay connected to the cloud to link with other Matter platforms.

We recommend managing your Tapo devices through the native app, as it provides access to the complete range of features. As you can tell, the Matter protocol offers limited functionality for this type of product.
