Model: Archer AX1500
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.24 Build 20240823 Rel. 43366(4555)

My issue is basically the same as this topic which never got answered: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/644032

I am trying to use the AX1500 as a secondary router to my garden room. I have a Virgin Hub 5x as my main router which is connected to the AX1500 via a CAT6a ethernet cable.

When I connect my MacBook via ethernet cable via the AX1500 OR any device over Wifi (5G) via the AX1500 I always get 100mbps speed (via Google's speed test). However when I connect my MacBook directly to the the Virgin Hub using the same cable I get 1000mbps. I get 1000mbps over ethernet and Wifi when connecting directly to Virgin Hub.

I have tried the AX1500 in both Access Point mode AND as a normal router but get the same 100mbps.

The entire point I purchased this router was to upgrade from the TL-WR940N to support my 1000mpbs connection.

Any advice is much appreciated!

  @woozle

I HAVE NEWS!

So, I just moved the AX1500 into the house and connected it using one of cables I was using in the gym (garden room) and I got well over 100mbs, not quite 1k but thats for another day. So instantly my heart dropped thinking it was the cable from the house to the gym, but NO!

Turns out it was the cable that went from the wall socket in the gym (yes I realise I missed out that part!) and the AX1500. In the gym I had one cable going from the wall to the AX1500 and then another cable going from the AX1500 to the TV, turns out one was CAT5e and one was just CAT5!

The 5e is now sitting between the wall in the gym and the AX1500 and I'm getting ~350mbs on my iPhone!! I will continue to play around with other cables etc tomorrow as its now 23:50! Hopefully I can find a CAT6 somewhere and try that!

Thank god the cable in the garden is ok!

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi,

Please check the "Ethernet Status" of your Archer AX1500 and let us know what speeds are reported there. (click on the "Archer AX1500" icon and then scroll all the way down)

Hi  @woozle thanks for the quick reply.

So it is currently in Access Point mode and the Virgin Hub is connected via the LAN (not WAN) port so those settings do not display.

However, I tried this before switching to AP mode and those settings all showed 100mbps. I tried changing the speed to 1000mbs full duplex via the dropdown but that caused the Wifi internet (NOT Wifi connectivity, just internet) to not work at all. There was no other 1000mbps option in the dropdown, only 1000mbs full duplex but were several 100mbsps and 10mbps options.

I should have added in my original post, there is a (TP-Link) 20 port switch sitting between the Virgin Hub and AX1500 - however it still worked fine when connecting my MacBook directly to the Hub via the same ethernet cable.

Edit: Sorry those settings do show in AP mode, just not for the "Internet" symbol. Both LAN 1 (TV) and LAN 2 (Virgin Hub) show 100mbps full duplex.

Based on lots of other similar topics on this forum, it does indeed look like my AX1500 is faulty as I cannot see/think what else it could be.

Ok.

For a test, would it be possible to connect the AX1500 directly to the Virgin Hub, without the switch in between?

This could tell us whether there is a compatibility issue between the AX1500 and the switch or a general problem.

Also, how long is the Cat 6a Ethernet cable that connects to the AX1500?
Although Ethernet connections should allow a cable length of 100 meters, sometimes connection problems can already occur at shorter cable lengths.

Does the data sheet of the TV clearly mention that is supports Gigabit Ethernet?

  @woozle

I could try removing the switch from the situation tomorrow so will report back.

The TV isn't really the problem, its anything connecting to the AX1500, including my MacBook which is obviously definitely 1gbps.

The cable is indeed quite long, not sure exactly as its going under the house and through the garden but again I get 1gbs when I connect my laptop directly to the cable.

If the MacBook is connected to the AX1500 via a fairly short Ethernet cable and still only showing as connected at 100 Mbps, then I agree this Archer AX1500 is likely faulty.

  @woozle

I will try a shorter cable tomorrow.

Incidentally, I just did a factory reset and when I installed it again it said this:

Hi@m4tth,

Thank you for contacting our community.

Generally speaking, if the speed is limited to 100M, you can also compare and test whether the link speed is 100M? Refer to: How to check the associated/link speed on a wired client

If it is, the Ethernet cable specification is probably CAT5 or below. It is recommended to try different cables first, and do not go through the switch, wall socket, etc. between the main router and the satellite router. It will be more accurate and faster to locate the problem by ensuring that there is only the Ethernet cable between the two routers.

Best Regards~
