Model: Tapo C220   Tapo TC72
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.2.1 Build 251221 Rel.40592n

This Article Applies To:

Tapo C220 V2

TC72 V2

TCA72 V2

TCB72 V2

Firmware version: 1.2.1 Build 251221 Rel.40592n

Phenomenon Description:

The cameras above become local only in the Tapo app, and the LED changes to a solid orange after upgrading to firmware 1.2.1 Build 251221 Rel.40592n.

Workaround:

Step 1. Refer to the instructions below to set a static IP and custom DNS server for your camera in the Tapo app. For the DNS server, try your router's internal IP or 8.8.4.4.
How to set a static IP for your Tapo Camera

After applying those settings, check whether the camera can be managed remotely. If remote management works, you can keep the current settings for normal use and wait for the official firmware release.

Step 2. Before the official release, a beta firmware is available to address the reported phenomenon.

  1) If Step 1 does not work, but your camera has an SD card inserted, you can refer to the following instructions to update the firmware via the SD card and check if it helps.
      Firmware upgrading package and guidance

  2) If your camera does not have an SD card, you can enable a hotspot Wi-Fi on your phone, factory reset the camera, configure it with another phone, connect it to the hotspot Wi-Fi, and then check if you can control it remotely. If so, send me (@Solla-topee) a private message or click here to email our technical support team with the following information if you'd like to try the new firmware.
      a. A brief description of the phenomenon you are experiencing.
      b. The camera's MAC address. You can find it in the Tapo app > camera's Device Settings > Device Info page.

Before the Upgrade
(1) Please be sure you have read the Beta Test Agreement before upgrading the Pre-release firmware!
(2) How to update the firmware of the Tapo devices on the Tapo App
(3) Firmware downgrade is not supported. When a new official version is released, updating it will overwrite the beta version.

The pdf instruction is totally wrong. If format using the bundled formatter.exe or the one built in in windows, the device can't read from the sd card. Since I have 2 C220, some trial and error gave me a solution and I had updated to the beta firmware. 1. Plug in the SD card and format the SD card using the Tapo app. This will make the SD card read-able by the device. 2. Unplug the SD card and plug in to your pc. Copy the bundled bin file into the SD card. 3. Plug in the SD card to the device. Wait for 2 minutes, unplug the power cord (or switch it off). Wait for a few seconds, then plug back the power cord (or switch on). 4. After a few minutes, the LED will be solid green. At this moment, the device feels bricked, but don't worry. Unplug the SD card then switch off the device and turn it back on. 5. Wait until the device fully reboot (or until you can access the device from the Tapo app). You will see that there will be a firmware update. Just update it as usual and wait until the device reboot until you can access it from the Tapo app. Voila, you can now access your C220 remotely. 6. Optional. If you wanted to use the SD card, format the SD card as NTFS using windows built in tool will do. Then plug back the SD card into the device and initialize the card through Tapo app.
