I would like TP-Link/Tapo to add an adjustable recording buffer for Detection Recording mode.

Current problem:

Detection Recording saves storage compared with Continuous Recording, but it often misses important footage just before or just after a person, pet, vehicle, or motion event is detected. Continuous Recording solves this, but it uses too much microSD card space, especially on higher-resolution cameras like the TC46.

Requested feature:

Please add adjustable settings for Detection Recording such as:

- Pre-record buffer: 5, 10, 15, 30 seconds before detection

- Post-record buffer: 10, 30, 60, 120 seconds after detection stops

- Separate settings for person, pet, vehicle, and motion detection if possible

- Record until motion has been clear for X seconds

Why this would help:

This would make Detection Recording much more useful without forcing users to use Continuous Recording. It would reduce missed evidence while still saving storage on cloud and sd card.

Example use case:

If a person walks quickly across the driveway, the camera may only record once the person is already in frame or leaving. A 10–15 second pre-record buffer and 30–60 second post-record buffer would capture the full event without needing 24/7 recording. Even if you can't see the person you still hear what they are doing given good audio recording is working on the camera.

P.S. if you need a software developer to help with the programming of new features email me, I can offer low rate or even volunteer if the code is well documented and easy to tweak.

  @DarkoBog

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful feature suggestion. We genuinely appreciate the effort you’ve put into explaining the current limitation, your proposed solution, and the practical use cases.

For the camera powered by a power adapter:
    1. If the detection video clip is stored on a microSD card, the camera will record when there is an event trigger within the detection zone, and the recording will continue for 1 minute after the detection activity has ended. The maximum length of a detection video clip is 3 minutes.
    2. If the detection video clip is stored on Tapo Care cloud server or Tapo hub, the maximum length of a detection video clip is 3 minutes, and the recording will continue for 10 seconds after the detection activity has ended.

Regarding the current logic of detection recording, we would like to clarify that most consumer-grade security cameras, including ours, are designed to start recording only after the AI or motion detection algorithm has positively identified and confirmed a target event.

We sincerely thank you for your offer to assist with development. While we cannot directly involve external contributors in our proprietary development process, we will ensure that your perspective as both a user and a technically minded individual is passed along to our engineers.

Thank you again for your passion and for choosing Tapo.
