TC-W7960 unable to provide internet with Cox provider

I have been using the TC-W7960 modem with Cox internet provider for the past year but it stopped working as of yesterday afternoon. Have tried resetting the modem several times.
I contacted the Cox support people, and they said that the modem "is not sending out the correct signals" and that I will need a new one. I can't tell if they're just trying to take my money or if the modem has stopped working for some reason.
