I have a 2018 MacBook Pro and a TP-link wifi router (C3200US). When I connect with any other device in the house by wifi - everything works. Including a 2013 MBP, 2017 MBP and 2016 MB Air + tablets and phones.

When I connect via ethernet from my 2018 MBP, it works fine, When I switch on wifi for the 2018 MBP and connect to the wifi router, ALL ethernet connections are disabled - so no other device can connect and of course I lose my connection to my cable modem and so no internet.

Any ideas what is causing this? I've reset the router - no luck. Also, Apple repaired, then replaced the first 2018 MBP that had this issue - and the replacement - a brand new one shosw the same issue.

Next ideas are:- generate a new MAC address for the MBP, or try turning off the Wifi on the router and use a separate access point to provide the wifi for the house.

Yes, the firmware is up to date.

@joedg

To confirm this is the Frimware  Archer C3200(US)_V1_170707 your router is on correct?

Somethings we would like you to check.

1.  When this happens, what happens to the light status of the Router and the modem/

2.  Does your Mac still have an IP address? and can you access the router from that IP?

3.  Are you using MAC clone in your WAN setup?  If so reset the rotuer and use the Setup Wizard, Do not clone MAC address and see if that fixes the issue.

If this fails we would like to see the router logs.

thank you

TY!

Confirmed. This is from the Archer 3200 Admin Web Page:   Firmware Version:0.9.1 0.1 v004b.0 Build 170707 Rel.58427n Hardware Version:Archer C3200 v1 00000000

1.  When this happens, what happens to the light status of the Router and the modem/

> The light to the cable modem turns orange and I no longer have internet access for any device connected to the router.

2.  Does your Mac still have an IP address? and can you access the router from that IP?

> will check - but yes, I can access 192.168.0.1 from the affected mac over the router's wifi - and other wifi devices still can connect to the router. BUT, any device connected via wired ethernet to the router no longer has access to the router and the router's status page shows 0 wired connections even though a moment ago - before I connected the MBP with wifi - it showed multiple wired connections. It still shows the correct number of wireless connections.

3.  Are you using MAC clone in your WAN setup?

> no. "Use Defualt MAC Address is selected on the Admin WAN setup

If this fails we would like to see the router logs.

Pls advise how to send those.

I wonder if I have hit a bug in OSX for Mojave on a 2018 MBPro. with a TP-Link router.  I will test tonight with another router. (media link).

Using a separate access point did not work.

not solved completely but seems to help.

I have been able to connect via a wifi range extender and that seems to prevent the problem from occuring. I will be working with an Apple Sr. Tech next week - who has access to engineers - and that may shed some light.

A question for your won TP-Link engineers:  What possible signal, setting, parameter, etc could a MBP wifi card send to the router to crash the router itself. Only by connecting the laptop back to the router via ethernet wired does the problem go away.

@joedg

I have a response from our System Engineers.  They think that the 2018 MBP sends some special type of data that disables the Switch (ethernet) control chip in the C3200.  It may be a compatiblity issue.  They are going to try and replicate the issue and if they can then they will be able to debug and provide a solution via a Firmware update.  If they can't reporduce they will need to work with you directly to test and debug.  The one issue we have with this is the time it will take.  Right now it is the Spring Festival at HQ and a large portion of the staff there are on vacation.  So they will not be able to begin this testing for about 2 weeks. In the mean time let us know what you find with Apple, and if new information comes up, we can talk about alternatives on our end if need be.
