@Tony  Can you please put this in as a feature request? I would like to be able to just connect certain devices to 5gz.

@starmanj

I asked for this feature.

I received this response:

Hi,

This isn’t a bug.  This is by design and likely not to change.  The Deco uses ART or adaptive routing technology.  With this the router does the network assignments.  It selects the band and channels of you wifi networks.  It does not allow for manual assignment like a traditional router would.  We are planning to optimize how the router does this assignment but I have not seen anything where we would intentionally break the technology the routing system was based on.

Best Regards

Please also add me to the list of users who need this future to happen!

Due to Covid/WFH i changed rooms. The M5 is in de room behind me, connected via UTP with a wall in-between me and the deco. Approximate distance between my PC (Mac and Windows) is 3 meters/9 feet.

When i start the computers, it connects to 5Ghz with a speed of ~178/220 mpbs. Signal strength according to both pc's 3/4.

But after some time it changes to 2.4Ghz with speeds of ~54mpbs.... Plus side is that signal strength now is 4/4, but throughput speeds are much slower due to 2.4ghz and congested wifi network of neighbors (only seems to connect to 2.4Ghz band 3 of 8, not the other wider and preferred bands).

So all in all, i would like to have my dedicated PC's fixed on the 5ghz band for higher speeds.

Mac has an AC wifi adapter.

Windows has Wi-Fi 6 adapter.

Thinking of buying Ubiquity AP's to get better speeds if this issue is not solved within reasonable time.

@JunkMailKing

I'm afraid TP-Link's response above says it all. They don't care what their customers are asking for. They believe their broken on-demand software is working great.

Will not recommend TP-link to anyone. You get what you pay for, buy a better system that lets you have better performance on the devices you need.

@starmanj I also have this issue. I'm surprised I don't have the ability to choose which band I'd like my devices connect to (I have Deco x20s). My router from 2016-2017 allows me to do this. Setting up a guest network might be a way for me simulate this, but it does seem like a hack and negates the functionality of a guest network. I'd really like to see the feature to select which band my devices should connect to/prioritize, especially after shelling out a good amount of money for this product.

@starmanj

Same issue here. Just got the router today and stumbled upon this thread while searching for an option to set the band as 5Ghz for selected devices, especially iPhones.

This is a deal breaker for me. I'm going to return this router right away as it's still in the return window.

What they are saying is the system is designed to work this way and to implement what you are asking for would break their system optimisation. Saying it's not likely to change it doesn't mean they don't care about their users, many thousands are quite happy how the system works.

@DaiC1 or the other users don't know why they are having problems. Or they don't care about this thread. The point I'm making is this should be a fundamental feature that others provide. If I had known this wasn't a feature I certainly would not have bought this. And no, it would not "break" their system to add this function.
