Model: RE220
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.1 Build 20191024 Rel. 48180

Router ------------------------------- RE220 --- Smart TV

The length of the dashed lines suggest relative distances -- certainly not to exact scale. And the Router-RE220 haul is not line-of-sight.

Object: prevent buffering delays while streaming to Smart TV.

The RE220's sole purpose is to extend to the TV.  The router supplies 2.4G and 5G bands. The 5G speed band is faster; the 2G has more range. But the 5G has sufficient range to get to the RE220.

Currently I have High Speed Mode configured to take 5G from the router and to output only 2.4G. Is that best? Or is the reverse best? Or doesn't it make any difference?

I would keep the 5G to the router, and run an Ethernet cable to the TV if it is that close for the best connection. If not, what you have should be fine. With streaming for a TV being 5 to 25 Mbps should be good.

@Tony Ah, hadn't thought of ethernet to the TV.  I now have that working. One wrinkle:

Last year on another thread which basically asked the same question,  you said, "Now after the extender is configured you can disable the extended Wi-Fi networks on the extender so no device will see the extenders Wi-Fi, but you will still have network connectivity on the Ethernet port (bottom of page 27 of the manual)." And in the manual: "Extended networks are enabled by default. If you want to disable the wireless function
of a certain band, just clear the Enable checkbox. In this case, all the wireless settings
of this band will be invalid."

Using Tether, I turned off the "Wireless" radio button for the extended 5G. When I tried to do the same for 2.4G Tether told me I had to have at least one wireless extended, and to disable both I'd have to use web management.

Using web management, the 5G extended Wi-Fi checkbox was cleared, but the 2.4G Enable checkbox was checked and grayed out (i.e., the checkbox was not available). The best I could do was hide the SSID broadcast. Is it really possible to disable both extended Wi-Fi networks?

The reason is probably because you were using Tether which needed to communicate to the extender directly. If using a computer it doesn't care because it connects from the router.

@Tony I didn't make it clear that I switched from using Tether to using a computer, based on Tether's suggestion to use web management, i.e., computer. To repeat my last paragraph:

It seems like you are correct so both SSIDs can be hidden, but not disabled. So the band that is extended will just be hidden in this case.

@Tony OK, thanks. Not being able to disable both is not really a problem -- I'm OCD, so I take "neatness counts" too far sometimes. smiley
