Model: Deco W3600
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version:

I've got Gigabit fiber and I recently decided to try and replace a couple of TM-AC1900 (flashed to RT-AC-86U) routers hoping that I'd have a more seamless mesh experience in the house and increased speeds. The good part is I don't lose connection in certain parts of the house anymore, the bad part is my speeds on the secondary W3600 aren't what they should be even though it has a direct ethernet connection to the fiber exactly the same as the primary W3600.

I wanted to keep the TM-AC1900s connected to basically use as access points since the W3600s don't have enough ethernet ports.

All tests done with speedtest.net

I've tried connecting everything a couple different ways both with and without the TM-AC1900s involved:

1- Both TM-AC1900s connected directly to fiber via ethernet. Both TP-Link W3600s connected to corresponding TM-AC1900s on opposite sides of the house via ethernet - basically sitting right next to each other.

Downstairs desktop computer connected to TM-AC1900 via ethernet gets 250Mbps down and 130 up

Standing 5 feet from downstairs TM-AC1900 and TP-Link W3600 Iphone 12 gets 600 down and 400 up (great!)

Upstairs desktop computer connected to upstairs TM-AC1900 via ethernet gets 270Mbps down and 275 up

Standing 5 feet from upstairs TM-AC1900 and TP-Link W3600 Iphone 12 gets 130 down and 75 up (wtf???)

2- Both TP-Link W3600s connected directly to fiber via ethernet. Neither TM-AC1900 connected to anything.

Downstairs desktop computer connected to TP-Link W3600 via ethernet gets 800Mbps down and 610 up

Standing 5 feet from downstairs TP-Link W3600s Iphone 12 gets 600 down and 390 up

Upstairs deskstop computer connected to TP-Link W3600 via ethernet gets 270 down and 275 up (???)

Standing 5 feet from upstairs TP-Link W3600s Iphone 12 gets 160 down and 130 up (seriously?)

@mike523

Hi, for two cases, are the network topologies like the following?

Are two W3600 set up under the same Mesh network or different networks on the Deco APP?

And Did they work on the wireless router mode or access point mode?

As for the speed test, it is like:

case 1

Ethernet speed from TM AC1900-1

275m/s ;270m/s

wireless speed from W3600-1(5 feet)

75m/s ;130m/s

upstairs

Ethernet speed from TM AC1900-2

130m/s ;250m/s

wireless speed from W3600-2(5 feet)

400m/s ;600m/s

downstairs

case 2

Ethernet speed from W3600-1

275m/s ;270m/s

wireless speed from W3600-1(5 feet)

130m/s ;160m/s

upstairs

Ethernet speed from W3600-2

610m/s ;800m/s

wireless speed from W3600-2(5 feet)

390m/s ;600m/s

downstairs

So your total internet bandwidth is 1G/s and shared by 2 floors, right?

@TP-Link Yes case 1 and case 2 look accurate to what I described. Yes I have Gigabit fiber split between the 2 locations upstairs and down. Downstairs is where the primary Deco W3600 is located. Both are on the same network named "Home". I don't know if they are set up in wireless router mode or access point mode. How would I tell?

Hi,

Please check the following information under case 2:

Please go to Deco APP>More>Advanced>operation mode to check which mode is for W3600.

At the same time, please also help me check the backhaul of the satellite upstairs Deco:

On the Deco APP, click the middle internet globe>click upstairs Deco.

The W3600 are set to wireless router mode The signal source for the upstairs Deco is the downstairs (living room) Deco. 2.4 GHz/5 GHz

@mike523

Hi, Thank you for the update.

Since you mentioned before(under case2) both Deco units are wired to the ISP gateway, while on the Deco APP, the second unit still used wireless backhaul from the main Deco, not Ethernet backhaul, which might be the reason why the speed of the second unit is far slower than the main unit because the wireless backhaul is highly affected by the wireless distance and barriers in between.

As for the fiber gateway, since there are two LAN ports, I guess it might be a modem-router combo.

if yes, you could still try to set up Deco W3600 as an access point.

@TP-Link sorry i wasn't clear, it's actually not t-mobile fiber, my isp is EPB fiber optic. The old routers i was using were t mobile branded though, that's all i meant.

@mike523

Hi, thank you for the information.

The above explanations are also suitable even though your ISP is EPB fiber optic.

@TP-Link There is no modem, just a couple of ethernet ports that feed the fiber in to the house. Are you saying I should set up each AC1900 router directly to the internet, then connect the W3600s to each AC1900 as an access point? Would I still be able to have mesh coverage that way? Any instructions on how exactly to do this? I was hoping to remove the AC-1900s, not just add more devices. I may have to return the Deco setup.
