Model: Deco BE63
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.3.2 Build 26040912 Rel 40631

My Deco mesh has been acting squirrelly for over a month now, and it's getting worse. 2- to 3-minute outages, now occurring more than once an hour.

We have a longish throw from the main unit to the satellite, but it's never been an issue before and the app generally shows 2 bars of connectivity out of 3 between the two when they are in sync.

This weekend I finally did what I should have done from the start:  check the logs.  I was surprised to see that although the syslog of the main unit starts on April 9 03:08, it runs to April 9 03:09 and then immediately switches to a time less than an hour from when I captured the log.  For example, it's currently 9:07pm and my syslog goes back to 21:05 (two minutes ago!.  When I checked the log half an hour ago it switched from April 9 to today at 20:41.  This doesn't seem to be normal behavior.

I was hoping to discern a pattern from all the outages but with only a few minutes of log data each time there's not much to go on.  I suspect it might be resetting the log every time the router reboots (it's now 9:12pm and the app says runtime is 7 minutes, so 21:05 would be about right).  There's never anything in the logs prior to the reboot.

The satellite (another BE63) log also starts at 21:05!  Is this a BE63 thing?

For a while I had some M9s and those logs went way back, but IIRC they just reported network reconvergences every time their backhaul connection went dead.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, welcome to the community.

Usually, the system log in the Deco's web UI resets after the Deco reboots. Regarding the reported instability, please refer to the instructions below to troubleshoot.
Fix Deco Disconnecting and Internet Instability Issues

If the same phenomenon persists, please confirm the following information for further analysis.
  1. On the Deco app > More > QoS page, turn off the QoS if it's enabled and see if that helps.
  2. How many Deco nodes do you have? Please go to the Deco app > Network tab, tap a Deco, and send us the screenshots of the Show Map and Show List pages.
  3. Who is your ISP? On the Deco app > More > Internet Connection page, please check the IPv4 Internet Connection Type and send it to us. Please also check if you have configured advanced features, such as VPN and parental control, on the Deco.
  4. What is the LED status on the Deco nodes when they disconnect? How many clients are usually connected to the Deco?

Best Regards

Thanks for your response.

Can that syslog reset-on-reboot be disabled?  It's impossible to see what was happening immediately before the reboot if the log is resetting.  That's a crazy design decision.

QoS was enabled.

I've switched to my old M9+ as my main unit, which resolved the recurring wifi disconnects entirely, so I don't think QoS was the root cause.  I've just disabled QoS anyway.

The network only had two nodes this weekend:  a BE63 as the main unit and another BE63 about 65' away.

On Sunday night I added the M9+ but left the original BE63 on the network so I could access it as needed.

There are typically 9-15 clients, depending on whether the older kids are home.  It can go up to maybe 20, but only once a week during my daughter's at-home Mandarin class with her friends (and, more relevantly, their parents).

Provider is Spectrum (Charter).  I've had Spectrum come in to check the modem, wifi router and coax. They said everything checked out on their side.  The main Deco unit is connected to the Spectrum wifi router.

Internet Connection Type is DHCP and I have a valid IP.

This has been going on for a few months now (just much worse recently) and our neighbor has let us use their wifi, which has been stable throughout.  The provider is not the issue.

No advanced features are configured.  No parental controls.  No VPN.

Fast Roaming and Beamforming are disabled.  Wireless Network Mode is High Capacity.

I have one IP reservation, for my NAS.

LED status of the downstream nodes switches to steady red when the BE63 was resetting.  I never saw the main unit reboot - it's upstairs and a little had to get to so I never got up there in time.

Hi,
Currently, there is no option to prevent the system log from being reset after a reboot. However, you can try to log in to the Deco's web UI before rebooting the Deco after losing connection, then save the system log for analysis.
How to Get Deco System Log

In your situation, please try to reproduce the instability phenomenon when the main Deco is Deco BE63, save the system log if possible, and then send an email to forumsupport.usa@tp-link.com with the system log and the following information:

Re:syslog rotates super quickly

@Solla-topee Thanks for responding, but I think you're missing the fact that the BE63 is rebooting spontaneously.  I don't have any warning, nor any way to capture the syslog right before it happens.  I'm certainly not triggering the reboots myself.

The closest thing I could do is maybe hope that the outage comes quickly and download a copy of the syslog once a minute until the reboot occurs.  If there's a way to ssh into the router then that might be something I could automate, but if not then I can't dedicate myself to this effort.

And for what it's worth there is already a ticket:  TKID260712423

Thank you

Hi,
If the Deco BE63 automatically reboots every time the issue occurs and causes the system log to disappear, you can skip the log collection step and email our support team about the situation so they can provide further guidance.

Note: I have reminded the relevant team to handle your case soon.
