Tapo DL130 lock fail and keeps unlocking
Purchase the DL130 from Amazon on prime day, installed for 3 days, it started failing, keep unlocking itself, this is insane. Notifications says malfunction, motor can rotate, but why it rotate to unlock position? Does it assume there's always person at home to manually lock it? What is the design logic behind it?

After discussing your case with our team, the key issue likely lies in the depth of the strike hole on your door frame. If the hole is too shallow, the deadbolt can’t fully extend, which may trigger the error you’re seeing.
You can test this using the dust box that came with your lock. If it doesn’t fit all the way into the hole, then the depth isn’t enough.

Additionally, with the door closed, try manually turning the lock mechanism and check if there’s any noticeable resistance or obstruction.
The above guidance is also mentioned in this installation guide - Step 9. Install the strike plate: How to install Palm Vein & Fingerprint Recognition Tapo Smart Lock (Tapo DL130)

If the strike hole was not deep enough, shouldn’t the calibration have failed in the first place?
Also, why did the lock work fine for the first three days and then start failing afterward? Every time I remove and reinsert the battery, the auto-lock function works for a few times, then starts failing again. At this point, I’m tired of troubleshooting it and will be returning the device.

Hardware installation is key, software only plays a supporting role and can’t replace a proper physical setup. The calibration feature in the app is designed as a final check after the hardware has been correctly installed, not as a substitute for verifying the installation itself.
Calibration ensures the lock can operate normally under generally acceptable conditions, but its success still depends on the installation being up to standard. If the strike hole is only slightly too shallow, the latch may still extend and retract with some resistance. As long as that resistance stays within the motor’s normal range, calibration will still pass. That’s why a successful calibration doesn’t guarantee the strike hole depth is sufficient. In short: calibration passing just means the lock can function for now, it doesn’t mean the setup is fully correct.
You can also check the thumb latch for a quick indicator. If it’s not sitting level when the door is locked, that’s another sign the strike hole isn’t deep enough.
Additionally, I’ve learned that a new firmware version for this model is about to be released, which greatly improves the product’s performance and is likely helpful with your situation as well. If you’d like, you can send your device’s MAC address to the email mentioned earlier (forumsupport.usa@tp-link.com), and then share the ticket ID with me. I’ll help request early access to the new firmware for you.
