I would like to suggest an improvement to the Tapo camera setup process.

Currently, changing the Wi-Fi network or SSID requires performing a factory reset and setting the camera up again from scratch. This is inconvenient, especially when making changes to a home network, migrating to a new router, or troubleshooting wireless connectivity.

It would be much more user-friendly if the Tapo app included a “Change Wi-Fi” option that allowed the camera to receive new wireless credentials while it is still online. The camera could then disconnect from the current network, connect to the new one, and retain all of its existing settings and configuration.

Even if the new Wi-Fi credentials could only be changed while the camera is currently connected and accessible, that would eliminate the need to:

  • Factory reset the camera.
  • Repeat the entire setup process.
  • Reconfigure camera-specific settings after setup.

An even better enhancement would be to allow the camera to temporarily enter setup mode (broadcasting its configuration SSID) without erasing its configuration. This would provide a secure way to update Wi-Fi credentials while preserving all existing settings.

As more users adopt multiple SSIDs (such as separate IoT networks) or periodically adjust their wireless configurations, requiring a complete reset for every Wi-Fi change creates unnecessary work. A dedicated Wi-Fi migration feature would significantly improve the ownership experience and make troubleshooting much easier.

I hope TP-Link will consider adding this capability in a future firmware and app update.
