Was this fiber broadband connection working fine previously and you are now just trying to use it with your Archer C1200?

Or is this a brand new fiber broadband connection that you are now trying to use for the very first time?

In case it's the latter, then I suggest you connect a Windows PC with Ethernet port to the Netzanschlussgerät and see if the Windows PC is able to establish a PPPoE connection. This would help to determine whether the C1200 is at fault or not.

The fiber connection is new, the Archer C1200 was previously connected to my DSL modem and worked fine (and still does, when reconfigured to its previous state).

I tried connecting my Windows Desktop PC directly to the Netzanschlussgerät with Ethernet and try to establish a PPPoE connection (manually starting from the Windows 10 control panel), but it didn't work. However, the 1&1 support was insisting that I should not be able to connect directly with my PC, but that a router would be needed inbetween. I'm not sure whether that sounds reasonable, honestly, I'm fairly new to the glass fiber communication technology.

By the way, I did test the Ethernet cable I have been using for other connections and it seems to work fine. The Netzanschlussgerät shows expected behavior (static green light), but I couldn't find any other way to test whether it is working.

There should be no difference between the PPPoE of Windows 10 and the PPPoE of the Archer C1200. After all, PPPoE is a standardized protocol.

Anyway, if the fiber connection to your house was installed by Deutsche Telekom, then the connection should be made via PPPoE and Internet VLAN ID 7. 
If the PPPoE username is one that needs to be put together from several strings and numbers, then make sure it was done correctly.

Did Windows give a specific error message or error code when it failed to connect?

And you definitely need to connect the Ethernet cable coming from the Netzanschlussgerät into the WAN port of the Archer C1200. The Archer C1200 cannot make a PPPoE connection via a LAN port.

So, I made some tests and I setup a VLAN ID for the PPPoE connection on Windows 10 (had to download a diagnostic tool for that). I got some interesting feedback.

Before I setup the VLAN ID:

It quickly failed with the following error message.

"Connection failed with error 651
The modem (or other connecting device) has reported an error"

After I setup the VLAN ID:

I had the impression it got response from their modem and even managed to authenticate, but it didn't manage to connect and gave the following error message.

"Connection to the Internet failed"

So I get the feeling the problem might be on their side. I might get a cheap, officially compatible router just so that their support team will take me seriously and not dismiss it as a hardware compatibility issue, possibly returning it afterwards.

I don't know if it would give any further clues about the problem, but it is possible to get a logfile for a PPP connection in Windows. 

To do that run the command:
C:\Windows\tracing>netsh ras set tracing * enabled

Then press the "Connect" button of the 1&1 PPPoE connection.

After it fails to connect run the following command to stop the logging and release the log files:
C:\Windows\tracing>netsh ras set tracing * disabled

Then convert the log file into text format to make it readable:
C:\Windows\tracing>netsh trace convert input=RRASEtwTracing.etl out=mylogfile.txt

Ok, I am not an expert on this, but here are a few bits from the logfile and what I think about them.

At timestamp 01:32:51.520040900 we see an error about "protocol 80fd". Protocol 80fd is the "Compression Control Protocol". 
I don't think refusing compression of data should be a reason the let the whole connection fail, so this error can probably be ignored.

But you could still test if this error maybe goes away if you enable compression in the PPP settings of the PPPoE connection you've setup in Windows. (refer to picture below)

From timestamp 01:32:51.690673200 onwards we see that Windows receives another PPP data packet, but throws the message "Protocol = UNKNOWN, Type = UNKNOWN, Length = 0x6a, Id = 0x0, Port = 0". Apparently Windows doesn't understand that data packet and hence just "silently discards" it.

A bit later we see that at intervals of 10 seconds Windows received six "Echo-Requests" and answers each of them.  

After the sixth Echo-Request it looks like Windows starts the process of terminating the connection.

I take two clues from this logfile.

1) It appears that after clicking the "Connect" button the connection is holding up for about 60 seconds. 
If that was indeed the case, then could you please use these 60 seconds of time to check if it is already possible to open the status of the PPPoE connection? And in case it's indeed possible, then check within the "Details" (button and tab) if the IP address fields are all populated with IP addresses that appear reasonable? (i.e. IP addresses of the kind you would normally expect from a working PPPoE connection)

2) That PPP packet of unknown protocol and unknown type looks suspicious to me. If that was a PPP packet for which the ISP expects a valid reply from the client, then this could be a problem.

Hi, sorry for the lack of updates but I got sick and I was out of it for a few days.

I just connected the officially supported router that I mentioned ordering in a previous post, and surprisingly it's been working out of the box!

I will still check the few things that you mentioned in your last post because I'm still curious about figuring out what's wrong with my Archer and the direct PPPoE connection...

Who knows? Maybe the officially supported routers are designed to understand that "Unknown" PPP packet and are able to respond to it correctly?
