CPE 510 v3 - AP problem - Can't detect SSID

Model: CPE510
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

Hi all,

I have a big problem with all my three CPE510 v3 (latest firmware installed) devices. I have configured an AP + 2 CLIENTS which worked well over 1 year.

The AP is configured to reboot itself if it cannot ping my client. Two days ago It started rebooting itself the whole day and no connection was made.

I thougt that the AP is broken and reseted it but I never could find the SSID. I also resetted  all clients. But on none I could find the SSID to connect.

My Laptop or smartphone or CPE510  CLIENT - just no one ccould connect to the AP any more. I have no idea whats going on and what I can do.

If i reset a cpe510 there should be an default open wlan to which I should be able to connect. I have tried some settings frequency etc but nothing.

Any idea?

thx  arnie

@arnie_s, just a guess, but did you properly ground your CPE as outlined in the Installation Guide?

If not, it could have been broken by an electrostatic discharge (ESD) during a lightning storm. This is most often the cause for malfunctions of (any) outdoor APs, which are not properly grounded.

With reset you mean resettig it to factory settings? If reseting to factory settings doesn't work anymore, the CPE is definitely broken.

To exclude any other reason for the malfunction, I suggest to check a CPE in an isolated environment, that means connect one of the three CPEs directly to a laptop, reset the CPE to factory settings and try to find out if it still works or if it is broken. It's unlikely that ESD destroys all three CPEs at once, but who knows?

@R1D2

Hi,

I think i maybe know whats going on now. I live about 30 kilometres air line distance away from Davos. And there is the world economic forum taking place.

There is a no fly zone and the army is monitoring this with at least 4 mobile radar stations in the surrounding area.  I have read this faq but unfortunately I think I cant switch to a non DFS frequency because CPE510 is not supporting it? Is this correct so it doesnt work? Any idea what I can do? I also have checked -> radartool numdetects but I cant execute it I get a permission denied error.

I have tested two devices in my room and a connection was established.

thx arnie

@arnie_s, that could be a reason – AFAIK the military in European countries uses the 5 GHz band for radiolocation services according to the European Table of Frequency Allocations, but no detailed information is available. Another guess is that they probably use jammers to block communication with drones which most often use the 2.4 Ghz RLAN for control and the 5 GHz RLAN for FPV. But since this isn't published usually (or at least not before the event is over), one can't know for sure.

If this is the cause for interferences, I guess you will have to wait for the end of the WEF.

Regarding DFS: unfortunately, in Europe only DFS channels are allowed for Radio LAN outdoor use. Technically, non-DFS channels are supported by CPEs for use in other countries, but even if you have early CPE hardware which lets you choose the region, I would not recommend to try this, esepcially not now ...

If you don't mind, please post a followup when the WEF is over and your CPEs suddenly work again. That would be really interesting to know. Thank you in advance!

@R1D2, I will let you know when it works again.

If I choose survey (as AP) I always get the following message.

So the AP is always trying to get an appropriate frequency but doesnt get one. I definitely guess it must be the radar station.

Do you think with a CPE210 I wouldnt have that problem?

thx arnie

Hi @arnie_s,

depends on the population in your region whether CPE210 would be better. In an overcrowded area you most certainly have more interferences permanently by other nearby APs in the 2.4 GHz band. But I definitely know that for such kinds of events jammers are being used in the 2.4 GHz band, so IMO it makes not much difference.

Hello @arnie_s, thanks for your feedback. Now I am sure that military has jammed the RLAN frequency bands.
