Why does my EAP773 AP router send a DNS request for "omada" (an unqualified name) every 10 seconds? How do I turn off this spam/malware?

As above, its not spam or "malware" its simply looking for a controller.  Its a known issue.  A DNS request is harmless and it just a couple of packets, you would need thousands of concurrent ones to make any appreciable difference to throughput

  @GRL

spam

noun

1. irrelevant or unsolicited messages sent over the internet, typically to a large number of users, for the purposes of advertising

Malware

Definitions:

Hardware, firmware, or software that is intentionally included or inserted in a system for a harmful purpose.

This is literally both. The fact the issue is known and nothing has been done to fix it further demonstrates this point.

@JanGold this is a known issue, it's basically the AP searching for a controller, which if it found one shouldnt happen, but for whatever reason also happens in standalone mode. Hopefully it will be fixed in firmware at some point, but otherwise it can be ignored or dropped from statistics of whatever dns server software you are using.

Did you read those descriptions?

"For the purposes of advertising"

"Intentionally included for a harmful purpose"

A DNS request is neither of these things.  Are you aware of what a DNS request is ?

Are you aware of your own response to this thread? "its simply looking for a controller" - literal advertisement for another product to purchase. "Intentionally included for a harmful purpose" - unwanted traffic is harmful to the quality of my network.

You deeply misunderstand what DNS is, and how meaningless a DNS request for a controller IP is

It is not an "advertisement" to buy something, nor is it unwanted traffic of any meaningful amount that is harming your network.

@GRL The fact I was able to discern the traffic through a packet capture adequately demonstrates I know what DNS traffic is, except apparently to you. Thank you for humbling us with your ignorance. Moreover, It is up to ME as MY network administrator to determine what traffic is harmful - not some random condescending ignoramus on a forum.

If you say so. However, lets do the math

DNS request, couple packets at most considering a packet is up to 1518 bytes in non jumbo mode.  Once every 10 seconds, we are talking in the range of one millionth of the throughput capacity of a gigabit port, once every 10 seconds.

Of course a packet capture will detect it, thats what they do, detect packets.  As for its quality impact, absolutely zero.  Loading a single web page will generate hundreds if not thousands of DNS requests for all the elements, resoures, plugins, eternal links.

The EAP requesting controller DNS doesnt even leave the LAN boundary.
