"Agile" range switches like ES208G lack features do not support port packet capture, so I upgraded to an SG2206MP "Access" switch to gain the packet capture feature. All the other "SG2xxxx" / "Access" switches we have bought include port capture. However, it seems like the SG2206MP somehow does not have this feature?

The SG2008P "Access" switch and other models do have this feature, so it is confusing that the newer SG2206MP from the same "Access" range does not.

How can customer know, before they buy, if the port capture feature is included? As far as I can tell, it is not listed in the specifications information for switches. In the product catalog you cannot search / filter for this feature.

Can you provide the product information on which "Access" switch models do or don't have the packet capture feature?

Can you also say if all "Access Plus" / "Access Pro" / "Access Max" / "Campus" switches have packet capture?

(PS. the "SG2206MP" is not listed in the model selection list above, so I had to pick the "SG2210MP" instead)

 Hi,@whereisaaron

Thank you very much for your feedback.

Since the packet capture function is a newly added feature introduced in Controller V6.1, it is not yet compatible with all switch models at the current stage.

We will enable support for this feature on eligible switches through future firmware updates. However, the specific release schedule of the relevant firmware is subject to multiple influencing factors, so we are unable to provide an exact timeline for the release. You may keep an eye on our official website for the latest information on your switch firmware updates.

To check whether a specific switch model supports this feature, you may refer to the official firmware release note for that model.

For example, for the SG2008P you mentioned, the addition of packet capture function support is documented in the release note of firmware version SG2008P(UN)_V3.20_3.20.17 Build 20260121: SG2008P | Omada 8-Port Gigabit Smart Switch with 4-Port PoE+ | Omada Network Support

Thank you for your understanding.

  Hi,@whereisaaron

Thank you for posting on our business forum.

We would like to kindly confirm with you: are you referring to the issue that your switch does not support the Packet Capture function in the Network Tool module of the Controller?

The Packet Capture function on the Controller has compatibility restrictions regarding device models and firmware versions. Please try to upgrade the firmware of your switch, and check whether the function can work properly after the upgrade.

Alternatively, you can also use Wireshark to capture device data packets. Please refer to the following guide for detailed instructions:How to capture packets using Wireshark on SMB router or switch | TP-Link

Thank you for your understanding.

Thanks @Jeremy_12 Yes, correct. I expected that any "Access" or better switch would support the Packet Capture function in the Network Tool module of the Controller. I have upgraded the firmware to the latest version but the Packet Capture function is still not available.

If some switches do not support Packet Capture, which ones? How can a customer tell? It doesn't seem to be listed in the "specifications" information, even for switches I know do support it. Maybe a FAQ could cover features like this?

I am familiar with using Wireshark with mirrored port etc. But being able to sample traffic at different ports, without mirroring and physical access, is extremely convenient!

If it is not already a feature request to support Packet Capture for SG2206MP, please put in the request!

Great, thank you @Jeremy_12. Thanks for pointing out this packet capture function is quite new with Omdada 6.1, and so not all firmware supports it yet. So for products we have already purchased, if they do not support packet capture, we can monitor their firmware updates to see if the functionality is added in the future.

For future products and product updates, could TP-Link consider listing this feature on the product datasheet? I think it is a positive feature for the products that some customers will look for. So when we are thinking about buying a TP-Link model, we can prefer models with the feature already in place.
