OK, I have screwed myself sideways here. I first ordered an ER6120 and (2) TL-SG1024, due to having 2 ISP and 1 of those giving me 2 Static IPv4 addresses I decided with the help of support to return those and grab a ER5120 allowing for up to 4 WAN links etc.. Now for some reason I was under the impression I could create VLANs to help my network communicate more efficient and effectively. So I purchased a TL-SG2424 v 3.0 aka T1600G-28TS v 1.0. Now that I've got everything sorted with the router, NAT, ONE to ONE for the statics and DMZ etc... I am reading that I may not be able to do what I was wanting. I have 1 available LAN port on the ER5120 currently it is 192.168.99.1 as DHCP I have the DMZ DHCP as 192.168.98.1. I would like to, and thought was possible until tonight, create separate VLANs for my security cameras based on the port selection of the managed switch. I have 4 now active plan for 8 and a NVR, for now they are recording to the same box that houses my serviio and sabnzbd. So I would like to see say a VLAN with 192.168.97.1-9. Also I would like to create a VLAN for my Wireless access points. I have 4. 3 Inside the home and 1 Outside. So maybe 192.168.96.1-4. Also, In order to use my 2 static IPs for the Cable modem provider I have a 5 port gigabit switch between the cable modem and the WAN ports of the ER5120. I would like to create a VLAN as well that would allow me to do this switching on the T1600G-28TS.

Is this even possible with this router and switch? or should I get a different switch? I don't know anything about VLANs other than the basic principal that a) its a way to segment a physical network virtually b) it can offer slightly more security than all traffic on one subnet. c) potentially it can reduce network traffic by reducing unneeded broadcasts. I just don't see how it will communicate and ID with the router.

Obviously I've got a lot to learn but please if you have any advice offer it up. I'm fairly sharp. I work for a telecom provider as well as work with Calix CMS daily. I'm not stupid just ignorant to the VLAN setup and details.

Me love you long time!

So you want to create 4 VLANs and each VLAN can have different subnets, right? But as you said, the Router can as most have two IP pool, one is in the LAN--DHCP Server and the other is in the DMZ-DHCP Server. If you want to assign the IP address for the rest two VLANs, you need to create DHCP Server by your self, or you need to buy a switch that has DHCP Server like T2600G-28TQ.

OK, So if I move up to that type of cost for that L2 switch with those features would it be more beneficial to use the L3 switch around the same price range?

Yes, especially because you can use multi-nets NAT on such L3 switches for sharing Internet by several subnets/VLANs (see http://static.tp-link.com/res/down/doc/Multi-nets_NAT_Config_Guide.pdf for an example of such a setup, I think this is what you want to achieve). But I would use static IPs for the security cams and APs instead of dynamic IPs. APs usually have their own DHCP server, which can be used for assigning wireless clients a dynamic IP.

I returned all the tp-link gear due to lack of support and tp-link was unable to help. They basically led me to believe I could accomplish these things with the devices listed above and then couldn't. I went with Edge Max Pro and started with their L3 edge switch. Things are working nicely, learning curve for sure but I am very happy with the forum service and support.
