The Difference Between Device Minor Version Numbers (e.g. V1/V1.6)

Released On: 2023-03-24 09:34:59Last update time: 2023-03-24 09:45:33

This article applies to all products, including routers, switches, EAPs, etc.

On the official website, you may be confused about the different hardware versions of the product, for example, the switch TL-SG1016PE shows V3, V3.6, V3.2, and V3.26 in the hardware version. You may be confused about whether these versions are the same, or whether the firmware of them is universal when upgrading the firmware versions of the switch.

We will discuss the following three scenarios:

1. Vx.0=Vx.6/Vx.8 (eg:V1.0=V1.6/V1.8)

This means that TL-SG1016PE V3 and V3.6 are the same, they have the same firmware version and the firmware versions are universal to each other.

The minor version number is only to distinguish the different factories.

2. Vx.x0=Vx.x6/Vx.x8 (eg:V1.20=V1.26/V1.28)

This means that TL-SG1016PE V3.2 and V3.26 are the same, they have the same firmware version and the firmware versions are universal to each other.

The minor version number is only to distinguish the different factories.

3. However, Vx.0 and Vx.x0 are version iterations and you can not upgrade firmware versions between different hardware versions.

For example, TL-SG1016PE V3 and V3.2 (V3.6 and V3.26) use different firmware versions, but their firmware version is not universal.

Note:

The display of minor version numbers on the Omada Controller:

Vx.x6/Vx.x8 will be displayed on the controller as Vx.x0, not Vx.0; only Vx.6/Vx.8 will display Vx.0.

For example, V1.26/V1.28 will be displayed on the controller as V1.2, not V1. Only V1.6/1.8 will display V1.

About This Article:

1. This article only attempts to summarize most cases, there may be some exceptions. For example:

TL-SG116E V1.2/V1.20 and V1.26 are the same, they have the same firmware version and the firmware versions are universal to each other.
TL-SG2210P  V3.0/V3.2 and V3.6 are the same, they have the same firmware version and the firmware versions are universal to each other.

2.  The firmware release notes will usually state which hardware version is applicable. For example:
