How to recover the firmware of an Omada EAP
If your EAP becomes bricked during a firmware upgrade, whether due to a power outage or another unforeseen event, you can use the EAP's Firmware Recovery Mode to restore functionality.
General Idea
Each device has a mechanism to check if it can boot successfully. When a device's system has crashed and it cannot boot successfully, we can hold the reset button for 5 to 8 seconds until the device enters Recovery Mode. The device will then automatically launch an HTTP server to display the Recovery page. We can then type the device's IP address into a web browser and load a working firmware onto the system.
Configuration Steps
- Search the official website for the firmware you would like to restore and download a copy to your computer. Once downloaded, unzip the compressed file and save it to a folder on your computer.
- Ensure that your computer is connected to the same physical network as the EAP. This can be through a POE adapter’s LAN port or through a switch connected to the EAP.
- Open your network adapter settings and set a static IP address to 192.168.1.100 or 192.168.0.100 depending on your EAP model. In both cases, you will set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. This guide uses a Windows PC and an EAP245 as an example.
- Unplug the EAP if it is currently plugged in, then hold the reset button as you plug it back in. Keep holding the reset button until the LED turns on, then release.
- From your computer, open a web browser and navigate to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.254, depending on your EAP model. You will need to connect via HTTP, not HTTPS.
- Select the firmware you unzipped before by clicking “Browse”, then select “Upgrade”. The device will restart after the firmware is fully installed.
- Verify that the firmware is installed by checking the web UI of the EAP afterward or the Controller once adopted.
