EAP225 V3 Web-UI - What is a Guest Network ?
EAP225 V3 Web-UI - What is a Guest Network ?

Model: AP200
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 2.40 (recent)

In the Web-UI of the recent firmware 2.40 of EAP225 under "Wireless - Wireless Settings - SSID xyz" there is one checkbox called "Guest Network". However, none of the user manuals and available documentation gives an explaination about what "Guest Network" means. Is this the former "SSID Isolation" or what? Suggest that your developers also update the user/help documents in parallel to the availability of new FW versions. That might help. Thanks.

Cheers, Manfred

It's documented in the EAP225 User's Guide on page 17:

Guest Network: With this option enabled, guest network will block clients from reaching any private IP subnet.

This is different from AP isolation:

  • Using a guest network will prevent guests from accessing any other private IP (wireless and wired devices even if in another subnetwork).
  • AP isolation is often implemented in the WiFi adapter, which then only isolates WiFi clients and thus prevents users from accessing other (wireless) devices in the same network, but not necessarily devices in the same or other networks using private IPs.

Hi R1D2, thanks for clarification. However, which User Guide to do mean? The documents I found on the TP support pages are more or less outdated: https://www.tp-link.com/de/download/EAP225.html#Related-Documents Cheers

The one found on the german support site for EAP225 V3, it's REV 4.3.0 December 2018.

Make sure to select V3 as the hardware version on top of the support site.

Hi Manfred,

I think you are using the latest firmware of EAP225v3(20181121), we have upgraded the "SSID Isolation" function to "Guest Network" function. With the guest network enabled, wireless clients which connect with this Guest SSID can NOT access the private network any more (including 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12, 10.0.0.0/8).

@jonas I am using the Guest function, but I still can access lan clients.

I am using 192.168.1.1/32.

Is it matter if i am using Public and not Private for windows?

Thank you!

@MakisFil

After enabling guest network, all clients connect to the guest SSID cannot communicate with each other. Besides, they cannot access other private subnet.

If you are using a public IP, these feature will not take effect on your network. But you can also use Access Control to achieve your requirements.
