Is it possible to set the speed of the fan? Even without load (PoE) the fan runs very fast and generates a lot of noise.

No, it is impossible. You can't do it even for T3700G series. FAN's speed is auto.

T1600G-28PS doesn't support to set the speed of the fan. Genreally it will make the noise during startup. But the noise will decrease when the switch is fully activated.

I have 2 switch T1600G-28PS to use in a silent environment and I would like to solve the problem of high noise produced by the fans. I think that the minimun speed of the fans (after bootup phase) can be lowered because with low load on PoE there is no need of so high speed. I suppose that a simple change on the firmware can set a lower minimum speed. Or, better, could be configured in some way.

Anderson, I would like to add to cico55's feature request for T2600G-28PS this suggestion for all T-series PoE switches:
- What about replacing fans currently built into PoE switches by silent fans in the production process at first?
- If not possible, I would appreciate if TP-Link could publish exact specifications of the fans used currently (air flow, air pressure etc.), so I could replace the fans by appropriate silent fans for myself.
One of two T1500G-10MPS I sold to a customer makes noise like a chain saw even in normal speed (at start it's running faster, so there is already kind of speed control internally), while the fan in the second T1500G-10MPS is not as annoying, but still too loud in my opinion for use in an office.
Silent fans might be more expensive then standard ones, but I would prefer to pay 15$ or 20$ more for a PoE switch with silent fans built in by TP-Link at first. Additional software-controlled speed regulation would be most welcome, too, but probably not needed at all in new products if silent fans are used. For customers who bought PoE switches already, software-controlled speed would be very helpful, though.

@DanielR I ended up replacing the fans with 2 of these https://noctua.at/en/nf-a4x20-flx
Now it's practically silent (you can still hear it from a few centimeters, but from a meter away it's inaudible), but beware that it most probably voids warranty.

I had those Noctua fans in mind, too. For me it's no problem to lose the warranty, but I would like to ensure that the fan has at least the same or similar characteristics (especially air pressure, air volume/hour etc.) since IMO this is critical for PoE switches.

@R1D2 That's a really critical aspect that you should consider and do the math. The stock fans are SUNON EF40201BX in my model, with airflow 10.8 CFM and static pressure of 0.27 inch-H2O vs. the Noctua 9,4 m³/h and 2,26 mm H₂O. If I do the conversion (please verify and do it yourself) then there's about a 2x and 3x difference in favor of the stock fans. In my case I need only a couple of PoE ports, so I don't expect too much heat dissipation and I feel this mod is safe. If you intend to utilize the whole the PoE budget then you'll probably burn the device and I really don't recommend to swap the fans or look for one that has similar characteristics with lower noise. So really do it only at your own risk.

@CsGabor, thanks! As I wrote, the two T1500G-10MPS are already deployed at the customer's site (we sell PoE switches bundled with our turn-key hotspot systems). I will check at next opportunity whether T1500G-10MPS uses the same fan as in your model.
BTW: did you measure the noise before and after the modding? Could be helpful for the feature request to TP-Link.

I did, but I didn't do it scientificall and accurately to be relevant. From a few centimeters away from the chassis the noise level was somewhere around 60dB with the original fans, which dropped to about 15dB with the new ones, which was actually the normal background noise level in the quiet room. So it was still audible from very close, but could not measure it any more as the background noise (silence) was already louder.
