Model: CAP1750
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.1.2

Hi, I have this TP-Link CAP1750. Whenver I create 5Ghz SSID, it never shows up on any of my Android phones. I have tried it on the Google Pixel 3 XL, Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro etc. -- all recent phones running on the latest Android 9.0 Pie. Although, it works fine on my MacBook Pro (2017).

What could be the reason?

EDIT: Screenshots of my 5GHz WiFi configuration:

Check supported 5Ghz channels on your devices. Configure 5Ghz channel manually on your AP. Usually, it is because end device just doesn't support Band1 (channels 36-44) or Band2 or Band3.

Questionmark wrote

Can you get us some more information about how the 5GHz SSID is configured?

  1. What channel are you using?
  2. What channel width do you have configured?
  3. Are you using a different network name than you are for 2.4GHz?
  4. What country are you in?
  5. Have you looked at a wifi analyzer app on any of the Android phones?

I am certian that all the phones you listed support 5GHz.  There has to be something going on with the configuration on the SSID.  I don't know what country you are in, but there are regulations about what 5GHz channels can be used.  In the US, you can use 36-48 and 149-165 without worrying about DFS, so I'd recommend one of those.  Also, be sure you are using a reasonable security configuration.

Screenshots might be a good idea...

1. Auto (tried switching to each channel as well)

2. Auto

3. Yes, different network names. I also tried it with same names, but the result was the same.

4. Pakistan - AP bought from UAE

5. Yes, it shows no 5GHz SSIDs on any of the above mentioned phones. Tried 2-3 different apps, same results. 2.4GHz works fine!

There are no regulations for using 5GHz channels here in Pakistan. Google Pixel 3 XL was bought from the US. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 from Germany (European variant) and Huawei Mate 20 Pro from UAE (Middle East variant).

I have attached screenshots of my 5GHz SSID configuration:

I have been facing similar issue with Android and some Windows devices. After allot of digging come to following information.

On paper, Pakistan complies with ITU-R Region 3 frequency allocations in general, with some amendments specifically PAK24 and PAK32.

There is a frequency allocation document available on PTA website, linked here ( https://www.pta.gov.pk/media/Pakistan_Table_of_Frequency_Allocations.pdf ). Check page 35, 38, 39 and 113, 114.

Further reading, check section 'ISM Band For WLAN, Bluetooth Etc' on linked PTA page here ( https://www.pta.gov.pk/en/industry-support/industry-services/type-approval/type-approval-general-info )

Based on above, we should get 2.4GHz (Ch 1-13) and 5Ghz (Ch 149-173).

Following is log capture from an Android device, when WifiManager set regulator domain country to PK (Pakistan), it get following hard-coded information;

WifiCountryCode: Succeeded to set country code to: PK

wificond: Regulatory domain changed to country: PK

wificond: 2.4Ghz frequencies: 2412 2417 2422 2427 2432 2437 2442 2447 2452 2457 2462 2467 2472

wificond: 5Ghz non-DFS frequencies: 5745 5765 5785 5805 5825

As you can see we are getting 2.4GHz (Ch 1-13) and 5Ghz (Ch 149-165).

The conclusion which I came to is that majority of WiFi devices sold in Pakistan markets do not comply with country's regulation, hence, we (consumers) are facing issues as such.
