Model: TL-ER5120
Hardware Version: V8
Firmware Version:

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a TL-ER5120 and want to use both Load Balancing and Failover between two Broadband connections.

Main main question is around failover - so I can set up Wan 1 to be the primary and Wan 2 to be the secondary and failover (based on DNS pinging or similar) to Wan 2 in the event of Wan 1 failing.  But if I am load balancing between the two Wans and Wan 2 fails - will all the traffice by default switch to Wan 2?

Or can I actually configure Wan 2 to be the failover for Wan 1 and Wan 1 be the failover for Wan 2?

Many thanks

A

@AlistairD

Suppose that WAN1 is primary WAN. WAN2 is backup WAN.

Gernally WAN1 is online and WAN2 will down.

When WAN1 is offline, WAN2 will be UP. When WAN1 get back to work, WAN2 will be offline.

@Andone So if I understand this correctly - the router will either work in Load Balance mode or Failover mode and not Load Balance but in the event of failure switch all workloads to the Primary WAN?

Thanks

@AlistairD

Suppose that you have two WAN ports. Link backup and loadbalance will not exist at the same time. Because link backup will make the backup WAN offline. So only one WAN will be online so there is no load balance.

When primary WAN down, the traffice will be switched to backup WAN.
