Hello,

I have two problems with this AP and I hope you can assist me a little bit.

.) I can't choose a channel higher than 112. I have the option to chose from 36 - 128 but whenever I choose something higher than 112 it gets downgraded to channel 40 or 36 immediatley. I can live with that, but I would like to know why my configuration gets ignored. It changes immediatley, so I'm not sure if DFS is even a possibility but I'm not sure.

.) Second problem, and thats the real one is my throughput. I'm using a Firewallappliance with opnsense (I7 Mini PC Kettop-Mi4500L with Intel Core i7-4500U -4 Intel Gigabit Nic). I'm using one Ethernet port for WAN, one for LAN and one for the AP. I bridged the LAN and AP NIC so all devices are in the same subnet. Now, when I use iperf to mesuare my traffic i get the following results: FW = opnsense firewall, AP = Acces Point, Server = Server connected via gigabit Switch thats connected to LAN Nic. Client = Windows 10 Client connected to AP via AC 80MHZ on channel 112 (no other devices on ap)

Client to Server -> 160mbit/s - 200mbit/s

Client to FW -> 160mbit/s - 200mbit/s

Server to FW -> 800+ Mbit/s

NetSpot shows zero other Access Points in the range of 5520-5600

My Settings:

No Airtime Fairness, no Loadbalancing.

Wifi NIC Status:

Hi @fsv,

I'm still digesting the rest of your email.  But the EAP225 & EAP245 don't support DFS.  So, in the United States there are only two 80MHz wide channels for 5.8GHz.  The EAP makes it seem like there are more.  But in reality anything you pick between 36-48 will be the first 80MHz channel, and anythng 149-161 is the second 80MHz channel.

I suggest you:

1) Use the 20/40/80 setting BW setting

2) Choose 36 for one EAP, and 149 for the other

3) Use separate SSID's for each radio (2.4 and 5.8)

4) Disable band steering

5) Disable Air Time fairness

6) If you're using Omada (software or OC-200) you can enable Fast roaming, and Wireless MESH.

BUT, if you are planning to hardwire all of your EAP's.  Some folks have reported bugs when Wireless MESH is enabled.  So you might want to turn it off if you're not using it.

Hi @fsv,

I should have asked, what country are you in.  In the UK (and perhaps EU), there is a limitation on 5.8GHz such that only one band can be used outside.  There is a setting for this in Omada (to enable / disable this "feature") perhaps it got turned on by mistake.

"Channel Limit" under the 5.8GHz radio settings.

Hi @fsv,

Are you using iPerf3 or similar for speed testing from Client <=> Server?  Make sure your NIC drivers are up to date for both the server and client.  There have been a number of folks on this board who had seen performance issues with some laptop NIC's (both Intel and Broadcom).  Sometime reverting to an older vendor specific drive (e.g Lenovo, Dell, etc.) helps.

Given that your client is 2x2.  Your max airlink rate is 866 Mbit/sec.  Due to overhead, application level throughput will only be at best 50-60% of your link rate.

So, you should be getting up to 866 * 0.6 = ~520 Mbit DL or UL.  So somewhere in the range of 450-600 is pretty typical (I know you're getting less than this.)

For comparison, do you have a modern smart phone or table (iphone, galaxy, etc.).  There are iPerf clients for these.  Or, if you're broadband / ISP is fats enough, you can also compare using internet speed tests.

Given the channel you indicated, 112, I'm not sure what country you are in.

Thanks for all those answers, so I'll put some more information here:

.) I live in Europe

.) I'm only using a single EAP245

.) ATM I'm using band steering and the same ssid for 2.4 and 5g, but I already deactivated it for testing and there was no change in bandwith

.) Air Time fairness is deactivated

.) Im using the AP INSIDE, and all tests where made with devices in the same room

.) I'm using iperf 3.1.3 for my tests but I get the same results with netio

.) I'm behind a 250mbit internet and I get 140mbps with speedtests, I just didn't mention it because I thought there was no point in testing internet speed when my internal LAN speed is slower than my internet connection ;-(

.) I'm using a web browser for configurations.

.) Im using "killer wireless 1535 ac" with driver 2.2.1444, but I get the same results with other devices like smartphones or different notebooks with different wifi nics.

Question: Is there a way to put iperf on the AP directly so I can test the connection without any cables and devices inbetween? I'm not sure but I think its possible that the POE Adapter or one of the two cables (AP -> cable1 -> poe adapter -> cable2 -> FW) butchers my connection-

I'm a little bit suprised that the EAP245v3 doesnt support DSL, because it even mentions it in the configuration:

Unfortunately I have no EAP245, but it should use the same 5 GHz channels as EAP225 does, that's U-NII-1 (5150-5250 MHz) and U-NII-2C (5490-5650 MHz) bands. I have no idea why selecting channel 128 falls back to an indoor-only channel. Shouldn't happen IMO.

No, iperf can't be run on the EAP directly. Why do you think the cable is bad? Can you replace it with another shielded CAT.5e or better cable?

I'm a little bit suprised that the EAP245v3 doesnt support DSL, because it even mentions it in the configuration:

The EU version does support DFS/TPC, it's required in the U-NII-2C band in Europe.

The EAP245 should be able to reach 867 Mbps wireless throughput (~640 Mbps iperf goodput) if your client is capable of 2 spatial streams (1,300 Mbps throughput for 3 spatial streams, 433 Mbps throughput for 1 spatial stream). But as I said, I have no EAP245 for testing, so I can only tell that EAP225 reaches full iperf goodput of 640 Mbps in ideal environments (inside the 150º coverage area under the EAP, 802.11ac-only, 80 MHz channel width, short GI, 2 spatial streams).

@R1D2

Hey, took some time. I bought new cables and replaced every cable with new cat6 ones. I still only get to 225mbit and now I have absolutley no idea what else I can do tbh.

@fsv, you could try to narrow down the cause for the low throughput. It could be your laptop/PC with this particular NIC. Maybe you know someone who has another laptop/NIC and who would be willing to run a test, so you can find out whether the cause is really the EAP or rather your system/NIC combo.

@R1D2

We have 3 Notebooks with different Wifi NICs, they all get the same speed.

We have 2 Smartphones of the same type, they get the same throuput, only slightly lower (216mbit)

Just to be sure, maybe I configured something wrong, I'll post my configuration. Band Steering is enabled atm, but I already disabled it for testing and got the same results:

@fsv, settings look fine, same as I use for EAP225. Sorry, that I can't help any further. I think it would be best to contact TP-Link support directly.
