Model: EAP245
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version:

Hello,

looking at the datasheets and product pages, there is no difference between EAP265HDv1 and EAP245v3 access point. Even the firmware from EAP245v3 size is almost the same and offers the same(?) optimizations as EAP265v1, i.e. "Optimize the performance of connecting multiple clients."

Is there really no other optimization? The reason I ask is that the price of an EAP265v1 is currently 1,5 times higher than of an EAP245v3.

So, why would TP-Link change the product name, only?

Hi @mobb,

Yup, just get the EAP225V3 for $59 instead (in the USA).  Unless you expect a super high density of clients (>40 / EAP) in a commercial setting.  Even then, I don't know that anyone's actually proven the EAP245 (w/4x4) is more performant under high user load.  it _should_ be, but is it?  Looking at Small Net Builder the performance of MU-MIMO across a number of product lines (granted mostly consumer) seems pretty sketchy.

EAP225V3 firmware gets updated pretty frequerntly.  EAP245 not so much.  EAP265 is "brand new" -- haven't seen any reports of users on this board yet, unless I missed them.

IMHO, better to go cheap now on the 225's, and plan to upgrade to the 620 or 660 in a year or so once the product (is released) and its firmware stabilizes.

Is this a commercial or residential deployment?

Educational environment with a lot of class rooms and old 802.11n access points with PoE, so the EAP245v3 or the EAP265v1 would fit perfectly. It seems I will have to wait until the first real benchmarks arrive and see whether there is any real difference between both access points. I do not want to waste money.

Hi @mobb,

If you have an AP in every classroom (not sure if that is true), and 50 or fewer clients per classroom / AP, the EAP225V3 will most likely be just fine -- and significantly better than your current equipment.

Regardless re: 225, 245, 265, Don't forget to plan for Omada Server or an OC-200.  With the new SDN software now, you might also want to consider upgrading to an SDN compatible PoE switch for enhanced management.
