Hi All,

 

Strange thing has happened twice now and I'm losing my cool a little.

 

We have a 1016PE switch set up with two main VLANS:

  • VLAN 1 = our home, office and the management VLAN
  • VLAN 2 = Our holiday let

 

I have the Load Balance Router set up thus:

 

Port 1 = WAN 1 (VLAN 10)

Port 2 = WAN 2 (VLAN 20)

Port 3 = Untagged member of 1 and 2 (so I can plug a laptop in and debug both)

Port 4 = tagged member of VLAN 1

Port 5 = tagged member of VLAN 2

 

The ER5120 also provides DHCP to the entire network and occupies 192.168.1.1.

 

This has worked wonderfully for a week or so, but yesterday devices connected via VLAN 2 lost visibility of the Load Balancing Router. On checking the management pages I discover that I now have the following setup:

 

Port 1 = WAN 1 (VLAN 10)

Port 2 = WAN 2 (VLAN 20)

Port 3  = untagged member of VLAN 2 and VLAN 236 (yes, 236 - not a typo)

Port 4 = untagged member of VLAN 2 and VLAN 236

Port 5 = untagged member of VLAN 2 and VLAN 236

 

I also discover that the 'management VLAN' has changed to 236.

 

I have no idea why this might have happened - we had a power cut which caused everything to reset but I've no idea why suddenly I have a VLAN 236.

 

I plugged a laptop into port3 and managed to gain access to the management pages, and I've reset the VLANs back to how they were. But today the same issue has occurred - with VLAN 236 appearing out of nowhere and VLAN1 seemingly evaporating into thin air. (unsure if a power cut or not - was at the pub!) 

 

 

I've updated to the latest firmware, and reset to factory settings today, but it seems that at seemingly random interval, this router generates a VLAN 236 and effectively screws my network up. I think the device might be at fault, but honestly if someone can tell me that I've made an obvious and stupid mistake I'd be much happier than having to return and refit a new LBR!

I doubt that the VLAN settings were changed by someone else in your network, you may check whether the login password is set too simply. I also suggest you contacting TP-Link support for advices when you have trouble, they always try the best to help.

@Yannie Thanks for the reply - it's just me on the home network - the load balancer is used to provide a robust internet connection to our holiday lets, so there's not anyone else who could have changed the config.

 

But VLAN236 popped up again today - I haven't deleted it this time, I've just set it to untagged on port 3. Maybe if it already exists, it won't create itself on all ports again!

 

I'll get to TP-Link support about it, thanks.

Do get back to update this. I'm curious about what could cause the problem.
