Hello all,
 
I have the following devices as part of my network:
  • 1x Virgin media router for internet access
  • 2x TP Link access points (EAP225 and EAP255) - connected my network via a 16 port switch
  • 1x 16 port TP link unmanaged switch - uplink to Virgin Media router
  • 1x 8 port TP link unmanaged switch - uplink to Virgin Media router
  • 1x 5 port managed switch (TP link SG105E)
 
On the WiFi access points, I have configured them to broadcast three WiFi networks:
  • IoT (for all my IoT devices)
  • Guest (for guests)
  • Home network (everything else that doesn’t fall into the two above)
 
My requirement:
  • I have a few devices plugged into both the 8 port and 16 port switches which I would like to be on the ‘Home network’.
  • All IoT devices and Guest devices can only connect in via the APs and I would like for them to be separate VLANs.
  • I want to set up the VLANs on the switch and bind the WiFi networks on the APs to those VLANs (e.g. VLAN ID 40 = Iot, VLAN ID 50 = guest, VLAN ID 1 = home network).

 

I can’t figure out how to do this using the web based configuration on the SG105E – getting confused between MTU, port based, 801.2q etc..)

 

Do I need to plug the 8 port and 16 port switches directly into the new SG105E and 1 port uplinked to Virgin hub? What about the APs, can they remain connected to the 16 port switch or do they also need to be connected to the SG105E?

 
Any help would be appreciated.

Hey! 

 

Unmanaged Switches won't be able to pass or "tag" VLAN traffic. You can do it via port-based VLAN on the TP-Link managed switch. I'm having a hard time visualizing your setup so I'll see how I go. No promises smiley

OK so can the Virgin Media Router do VLAN tagging or have the option to support 802.1Q? Otherwise we are in trouble. I have seen some ISP provided routers that do "VLAN" but it is not a true VLAN, they just block off a port for a different address range/subnet. This is true on a lot of Technicolor Routers that are typically purchased by an ISP and branded as their own:

Unfortunately the Virgin Media router is supplied by my ISP and so does not support VLANs. I do however have the ability to put the device into modem only mode. I was hoping to do this and use the SG105E as the main device to set up the VLANs.  Is this possible?

The router needs to be VLAN-aware so that the SSIDs in different VLAN can get Internet access.

 

You may purchase a router such as TL-R600VPN to set up the VLANs. Say topology:

ISP---- TL-R600VPN(Port5)------(Port1)TL-SG105E(Port2)------EAP225 )))((( SSID1 on VLAN10, SSID2 on VLAN20, SSID3 on VLAN30

 

On the EAP225, create SSID1/SSID2/SSID3 and enable wireless VLAN10/20/30 on these SSIDs respectively.

On the TL-SG105E, create VLAN10/20/30 respectively and add the Port1 and Port2 in these VLANs, Tagged.

On the router, create VLAN10/20/30 respectively and add the Port5 in these VLANs, Tagged.

 

Generally speaking, the ports between the VLAN-aware devices(router and SG105E) should be tagged in the VLAN.

Hey @Snc!

 

@Fae is absolutely right. In most networking scenarios you will have what we call "Router-On-A-Stick" setup. This will be a VLAN aware Router in combination with a VLAN aware switch. The switch won't be able to handle everything. 

 

You can use the Virgin Media Router in front of a VLAN aware router in bridge mode e.g.

 

VLAN Aware Router ---> Virgin Media Router (Bridge Mode) ---> Internet

 

In essence the Virgin Media Router becomes a straight pass through from your ISP. I've attached how my Network is setup in "Router-On-A-Stick" scenario. It's a bit complex but should give you a better idea.

It's up to you. If you don't need the SG105E switch to expand the ports for the router, you can remove it.

@Fae Thanks for the feedback. I have kept the switch and added it to my topology accordingly.

 

 

I have configured the VLAN on the TL-R600VPN as per this screenshot. Can you confirm if I have set it up correctly? Also, VLAN336 and VLAN436 were there by default even after I did a factory reset. Is this normal?

 

I have configured VLAN on TL-SG105E. Is this correct?

 

 

The final step was to configure the APs using Omada controller, however, this is where the issue resides. When I configure the SSID to map to the VLANs (e.g. 44, 55 or 66), all the wireless devices lose internet access. 

 

 

Do you know what I am doing wrong?

Based on the screenshot above, if the WAN mode is set to 1, then the VLAN settings are good.

 

Kind note:

Port1 and Port2 work as WAN ports by default settings, ensure the WAN mode is set to 1 if you want to use Port2 as a LAN port.
