Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 1.1.7 Build 20201010 rel.49458(5553)

The router supports dual band hence it supports 802.11n @ 300Mbps and 802.11ac @ 867Mbps. 

 

However, I use 5G band for gaming and sad to say WMM affects the traffic for it. 

 

I have disabled WMM for both bands to improve the overall performance, but I'm aware to have capped speed to 802.11g which is 54Mbps for both bands. 

 

I'd like to enable it with my preferences. Now, is there any possibility to have customize settings for WMM to re-prioritize traffics?

If you are asking my personal opinion, no I dont.

 

I usually get   2.4   to   N only, that way it removes the older B ang G stuff that I really no longer want on the network.

 

5Ghz  I set for N / AC  as some of the stuff (echo, IOT, Bulbs etc) are all N grade (300mbps) and that is about as low as I go.. i dont want A on there.  However turning it to AC only mode would cost too much in replacing hardware :)

Hey

WMM will affect non WMM traffic as it delivers packet priority in the following order

  1. voice
  2. video
  3. best effort
  4. everything else

 

Its likely that your gaming traffic is not classified as VOICE or VIDEO and therefore is falling under best effort..   WMM is a fixed standard and cannot be re-prioritized.   A lot of people confuse this with traffic prioritization, which is sort of is... it just prioritizes Voice and Video over everything else! 

 

Honestly, in my experience after 100s of WiFi installations.. WMM has been enabled in all but a handful of setups, its simply not needed unless you have massive video or voice traffic.  For a home setting, I would recommend you ignore WMM completely.

802.11g is an old standard now and only operates on the 2.4ghz, ideally disable support for B and G setting the 2.4ghz to N only.  This wont affect 5ghz which supports   A  N   AC and AX traffic

Thanks for this information. If I set N only mode to 2.4G, should I set AC only on 5G? As of now, it uses the A Standard.

 

Of course, it will be experimental but I'd like to hear your opinion.
